Any good reasons why I should not buy a Segway?

The Segway PT is a two-wheeled, self-balancing, battery-powered electric vehicle invented by Dean Kamen. It is produced by Segway Inc. of New Hampshire, USA. The name Segway is a homophone of the word segue, meaning smooth transition. PT is an abbreviation for personal transporter.

Computers and motors in the base of the device keep the Segway PT upright when powered on with balancing enabled. A user commands the Segway to go forward by shifting their weight forward on the platform, and backward by shifting their weight backward. The Segway detects, as it balances, the change in its center of mass, and first establishes and then maintains a corresponding speed, forward or backward. Gyroscopic sensors and fluid-based leveling sensors detect the weight shift. To turn, the user presses the handlebar to the left or the right.

Segway PTs are driven by electric motors and can reach a speed of 12.5 miles per hour (20.1 km/h).

I can see some great uses for owning one: going to that place over there, coming back to here from that place over there, just hanging out.

pros

* look rad
* go fast
* chick magnet
* add gravitas to any situation
* good for being GOB
* likely to improve stamina and all round health
* smell sweet
* fantastic crime stopping abilities

CONS

* NO,YOU SHUT UP! YOU'RE NOT EVEN MY REAL DAD :mad:
* Can only drive one.

What do you think? Can I have a poll please?

A) become Segway.
B) you can't handle the Segway!

Can you use it where you are?
As they aren't legal round here. Would love them to legalise electric transport, in the same way they legalise electric bicycles.

Go for it.

It's really annoying they aren't legal on roads/paths in the UK, would make pedestrianising city centres much easier.

In New Zealand the Segway PT is classed as a mobility device, in the same category as a mobility segway scooter or electric wheelchair. Mobility Devices must be ridden on footpaths where possible, at a speed that does not endanger others, and give way to pedestrians.[60] This ruling might not be consistently applied: in 2011, police in Taupo in New Zealand's North Island had to stop using Segways because there is no separate vehicle classification that applies to them, requiring their registration as roadworthy in the same manner as cars.[61]

e: it's not a trick Begbie, it's an illusion!

More sensible legislation than here then.

They're silly expensive though. Compared to an electric bike, electric skateboard etc.

Can they be modded? I mean where would you put any goods you wish to transport?
(Mountain Dew, MtG trading cards, Cheetos, DVD box sets etc.)

Do you have to wear a safety helmet when riding one?
(Will it fit under my Fedora?)

Can they be securely parked should I want to go into a store/library/convention?

What is the ruling on capes?

It will all be fun and games at the start, but then you will realise that you have spent £4000 on a glorified scooter. You will spiral in a never ending circle of depression, alcohol and harder and harder drugs. You will end up a meth addict, living out of the back of a 18 yeard old rust bucket of a volvo estate. Wondering why you bothered to buy a Segway in the first place and that it must have been a government conspiracy plotting your downfall because you know the "truth". Eventually you will die alone, chances are some drug or alcohol related death, in you trash filled car. Your last dying words will be "Why the Segawy......"

TLDR: Don't get a Segway
