MSI‬ touting DC overclocking on H97, H87 and B85 based motherboards

Well when you pay less for Hxx and Bxx motherboards you are accepting that overclocking isn't a function, so I would expect Intel to block it like before.

It isn't blocked though, certainly isn't on the Wifes Gigabyte B85-D3H. See my post here.

Interesting that, but I thought the microcode update was done at the CPU level??

It says the update patches the CPU.

The update will patch the microcode of the processor via the motherboard's BIOS, and while its installation will not be mandatory for those who have already purchased a board and chip it will soon find its way into the retail channel as a preinstalled update.

It also says the CPU microcode is where the overclocking block occurs.

How old is your Core i5 4670K??

Did you get it recently or last year??

the cpu microcode can be edited from bios?

pretty sure its only implemented through bios's so there might be a way to edit/flash it out of locked bios's

Got the 4670K last November which was quite a while after they supposedly "fixed" things. CPU microcode is in the bios updates though not in the cpu's themselves and this board's bios was updated a couple of months ago when I built the pc. There is nothing to stop people downloading the older bios from the boards download library either.

Yes, but the article says later CPUs will have them installed at the factory?

Interesting indeed though.

What batch is your CPU,as you will be able to know the production date???

Might have an idea for a thread later on.

idk how they can store the fw in the cpu?

if they can then your screwed if it relies on being implememented into the mb bios then it can be easily edited out
