Ideas for redecorating rented room (holes in wall?)

I'm taking on a new rent. It's only a single room with shared facilities. It's in pretty shoddy condition at the moment, but that's life, the rent I pay more than makes up for it!

Anyway, I've been granted permission to do the place up. :)

Here's the current state of affairs.

Pretty dire linoleum floors, walls have a fair few pock marks, and there is quite a a lot of old stuff around the place.

Does anyone have a clue where to start? It's got absolutely no furniture, so I'd like to get it done asap before I have to get stuff in.

If I remember correctly, holes need to be filled in with plaster or putty or something?

The floor I'm tempted just to throw a rug on. Any ideas of colour paint? :)

Shouldn't your landlord be responsible for making it a bit nice? You could spend money on it and run the risk of your landlord putting your rent up as he can achieve more for it than the condition it is now.

Are you surprised that you have been "granted permission to do the place up"?

You are just doing up a property the landlord owns, for free!

If it is that bad, get him to do something about it. (I can't see the pictures as I'm at work)

It's not a typical rent agreement, so there are no obligations on his part. I've got the place for a couple years at this price, after which I'd be moving on anyway.

I was thinking filling in the holes, painting over the walls, maybe a rug on the floor? :)

Fair enough then. I had visions of you forking out loads of money on renovating the whole place to a high spec and then moving out. :p

**** that haha.

Nah, normally I wouldn't bother, but I've always been very transient, and I want to at least make a place a home so to speak. Last few places I've lived in, I've stayed the entire time without doing anything at all to the place.

Throw down the cheapest laminate flooring you can find? a rug isn't gonna last long anyhow with your typical rent.

EDIT: Oh assumed you were renting it out when I posted.

Polyfilla and a good bit of paint would sort most of the walls I suspect but the "decor" looks a tad industrial and stuff like changing the lights would be a bit of a job.

It was an industrial place, so I think you're right about being limited about what I can do.

The lights are pretty grim alright. What sort of plug in lights could I get that would be an alternative? :)

Industrial looking, School?
Is it even legally rentable as a living space? I don't see any radiators?
How above board is this?

Gut the place and get the entire room re boarded/plastered.
Clever reboarding and you could possibly lose the industrial looking surface mounts.

Fresh white paint will make the place look so much better.
Cover the floor with a dark coloured laminate and Im sure you could do something with the school looking cupboards in the corner.
