Naval Action. (OldSchool)

I've been watching the Unit Lost videos of this on YouTube, I'm surprised there wasn't a thread already.

I think it looks great. I'm sorely tempted to buy in to the alpha, but I think I'll wait.

The ships models look fantastic.

Right now you can only play Ship V Ship but it looks fantastic. They say they want to have an open world that you explore and trade with ports etc. I take it you will progress up the Ship ladder as you trade etc and then you have to choose if you’re a pirate or pirate hunter or even protecting a trade route. Sort of Elite but in ships in that you do your own thing, loot if you want and meet players on your travels.

I've got the Alpha. It's very stable and plays well, it's a fun game already and has pretty good community with fools being a very tiny minority.

Once you progress to square sails you really have to pay attention to the wind and use the masts controls independently else you can become a sitting duck hitting a headwind. You can also change your cannon loadouts, which has an effect on the ships stability. I learnt this in a storm were a gust keeled over my light ship and I sunk :o:D

Ships of the line (SoL) are impressive and very scary when you are in a light ship but not impossible to beat. SoL's are slow and need support so when people are overtly wealthy, there will still be plenty of light and medium ships being sailed.

I've played the few EA games I'm involved with far more than any AAA game I've brought over the past year or more, so I'm getting my funs worth for my money. I don't see it as paying to play the alpha, rather it's funding the development without the suits from publishing companies perverting the nature of the game to suit their profit graphs. Sony can go to hell with their H1Z1..

This looks fantastic - is there any view on a full release date?

Well....I think that qualifies as a fairly comprehensive answer :)

Copy and paste is your friend :)

But you know what been out of games for years and years and only played on PC’s. I'm just now just waiting till Win10 later in the year to get a new rig for m OC. My steam account has one game and the only other new game is Elite Dangerous that will sit in their store till I need it. After backing ED I was left feeling sad there was not a lot I fancied but slowly games have appeared like this one that look very interesting. Now following 21 games on steam "Stew" account :)

So this opens up on steam for early access tonight. How is the game these days? I remember watching a load of videos and streams last year and it looked very promising indeed. I have some christmas money left in steam wallet, worth a go?

The core fundamentals of the game are very strong, there's still moments where various bugs/glitches crop up (e.g. guns not firing, ghost ships, occasional CTD) but I'd say I only ever encounter a serious bug once every 4-5 sessions of playing.

The UI needs a bit of attention, although I'm more happy to see them continuing with their focus on getting the game to work properly as their priority.

I quite like the open world mechanic of the game, I've attempted to sail from one side of the open world to the other but the map is so huge that it either loops or it's insanely huge... while sailing around you can drop into an instance of upto 24 vs 24 players, the drop-in instances seemed to load-up fairly quickly (perhaps slightly slower than loading a World of Tanks match).

---- here's their latest email to existing backers ----

Dear Captain

We are extremely happy to announce that Naval Action early access will launch on Steam on the 21st of January 2016.

We would like to thank you for participation in the sea trials and for the financial support you gave us. Without you this beautiful game would not happen.

Chapman's yacht have been added to your account as a redeemable. It will always be available to you on all servers even after you delete a character and create a new one.

Important: Action required - deadline 21st of January 5am Pacific time USA.

In addition to the yacht we plan to give all testers a couple of exceptional vessels with limited durability that could simplify your progression.

To receive this bonus you have to login into the game any time before 5am PST on the 21st of January and create a player for the nation of your choice. The process will take no more than 10 mins depending on your internet connection.

This redeemable bonus is account based and one time use only.
If you don't use them they will be available even if you delete the player, and will be available after creation of the new character.

If you missed the deadline - do not worry. We plan to continue rewarding testers with extra content in the future.

Good luck at Sea!

what's te community like? i've read that it's rather toxic, is that true?

Not at all in my experience so far on Great Britain, everyone very helpful in chat answering any questions. I have not done any large PVP battles yet though still trying to get to grips with it in missions
