GTX 780Ti or GTX 970?

This might be a silly question but I've read good things about the 780Ti's and before I go for a 970, I was wondering which would be the best to go for?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of the 780Ti? (gaming uses at 1440p btw)

970/980 move with the times.

I figured this....but why??

Almost everything I can find about the 780 suggests it can be more on a par with a 980  - given that OcUK are selling the 780Ti at a full £50 less than the 970 I'd be going for, what specifically am I missing out on?

Driver support lately seems lacking on the 780 series; then you have 970 memory *some say non issue others say issue* if its 1080p its tends to be a non issue.

Depends on what you want to run at; what you games you're looking to play etc. Are you set on Nvidia?

plus 390 about to drop in the next couple months I'd say to wait and see where the dust settles.

can always pick up a 290 for cheap *go dark side :D* as they are holding up far better on games than the 780 series......crossfire needs help ugh.....

I'll be gaming at 1440p so really just looking for the best option to upgrade my current GTX 670.

I much prefer the Nvidia route to AMD, mostly down to the lower PSU requirements! (and I would assume lower temperatures and noise levels)

Was pretty much set on getting the KFA2 GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infin8 Black Edition" when I saw the post from Gibbo for the OcUK GeForce GTX 780Ti "NVIDIA Reference" and remembered that I'd seen that these were great cards!

Most benchmarks I've seen seem to suggest that the 780Ti is "better" but I don't know what the impact is of using an "older" card!?!?

780Ti is also much hotter, louder, and pulls a lot more power than a 970 though remember.

I genuinely think the 780Ti is the better card now, after the 3.5GB memory debacle of the 970. And that's not just because I own 2 of them (reference cooler design, inno3D ones). Just look at a load of benchmarks, the Ti often beats the 970, especially if you add a mild overclock.

970 does run cooler though, could be something to consider.

Also, you may pick up a very good deal on a used Ti, or two (watch this space, I have stupid stupid urges to delve into Titan X at the moment)

If it is strictly Nvidia cards we are talking about, I think 2nd hand Titan would be where the smart money goes, now they they are going for like £325~£350.

GPU wise, if it is a graphic setting which a Titan cannot cannot handle, the 970/980 wouldn't be neither with their little extra GPU grunt; however the 6GB of the Titan would mean it would handle the recent rise the poorly ported/optimised games with ridiculus high vram usage better. If the GPU grunt is up to scratch, the Titan will be able to maintain the use of higher AA level, whereas cards like 780Ti/970/980 would have no choice but to reduce the AA settings, not because of their GPU not being fast enough, but the fact of the user getting stuttering when games hitting beyond 3.5-4GB vram usage.

The PSU draw could be the killer here for me then - what sort of PSU would I need for a 780Ti? (there is nothing mentioned on the new one for sale that I can see!?!)

Your current one in your sig should be fine for one Ti (ocz 600 watt??), although I've learnt that more PSU power (and equally importantly quality) is never a bad thing. My previous PSU to my current 1000w superflower made awful squealing noises when I went 780Ti SLI. It was an XFX 750 black. Obviously it was being pushed to its limits.

You should also consider a Titan black perhaps? It's essentially a 780Ti with double the Vram ie 6GB ram. All depends on your budget and what used deals you may get I suppose...

As everyone will suggest too, the smart thing would be to wait for the '980Ti' or whatever they call it, and AMD's next offering, but us graphics whores aren't often very smart ;-)

OP's budget seem to be around the £300 mark at most, and the new cards are most likely out of what he's willing to pay for, considering you can pretty much be counting on the Nvidia "980Ti" or "1080" (whichever it is called) 6GB will be coming in at £600+ at least, and for the AMD "390x", it would be £400+ at least, probably close to the £500 range.

Consider the 780ti deal in Latest News forum and for £249 its not that bad and faster than a GTX 970

The deal on 780 Ti is really good (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=27823171&posted=1#post27823171). Solid cooler, I would go for one of them VS a more expensive 970.

980 is the one to get though, and if you can Titan X ftw !

Yeah, this is the one I was thinking of but it seemed to change to pre-order pretty quickly and I don't know if I can wait over 2 weeks! :p

I've been looking for a 2nd hand 980 but you are looking at £380-£400 which really goes over my budget!

What resolution do you game at?

If you can't wait why not consider 960/970..

I've been using a 960 until my Titan X arrives, and honestly if I was @ 1080P I would have used it until Pascal.

Around £150 for a 960 with Witcher 3 game (£40). That's a solid option imho (For 1080P)
Otherwise 970 is around £260 with Wicther 3 as well (1440P). Plenty in stock, order one today get it tomorrow ;)

I personally believe the TI is the better choice, no issues with stutters due to vram segmentation. Yes it only has 3GB vram but 99% of games at 1080p use under 3GB maxed out from my own experiementation with them hell even at 1440p I find it hard to use 3GB depending on the game, yes its a slightly hotter core however if you have good airflow then generally both will hit the same temps and while it uses more power it's not that much

Was using well over 3GB at 1080p on Dying Light with one 290X with the view distance at half and all the NVIDIA stuff off. That does not mean that a 3GB card would perform worse though because grunt is usually more important.

If it was my £250 I'd have it down on the 780ti out of the two cards, though both are going to struggle for VRAM at 1440p over the next year or two.

op is at 1440p so 970 or similar would be the minimum ideally.
