So I just received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Virgin Media.

Operator: Can I speak to so and so

Me: Yes, speaking

Operator: I'm calling regarding some discounts, can I take 3 characters of your password please.

Me: No

Operator: Why?

Me: Because you're calling me, If I call virgin media using 150 or other permanent number I know I'm providing my password to a representative of Virgin Media. Because you have called me, can you please confirm the first line of my address so I know you actually have my details on your screen, or please allow me to call you on Virgin Media's permanent number so I know it's you.

Operator: No I'm not allowed to give you information, that's why I'm only asking for 3 characters of your password. And you won't be able to call us these discounts as you have been selected for this offer.

Me: When I call Virgin Media, the system also asks me for 3 characters, for all I know you could be on the phone to Virgin Media on another line pretending to be me and asking for my password to give to them. You're a pleasant person, but I'm very sorry this isn't going to work, good luck and good bye.

Operator: OK sorry to disturb you.

So have I just missed out on some epic discounts or have I just saved myself from some sort of scam?

Just Tweet them and get the discounts that way.

I think you did the right thing. If they were calling the landline on your account then they should be pretty happy that it was the right person. Not being prepared to meet you in the middle by giving you an address would make me suspicious as well.

should have asked them to send you the discount info via email or post.

I highly doubt they'd ever legitimately phone you and ask for your password/digits of your password though. In the past, every discount or deal they've had going I've had some junk in the mail or in my inbox, never had a phone call regarding it.

I think this is genuine.
I had something similar and had the same conversation as yourself.
I googled it afterwards to find that's how they do it.... Madness

Had a similar call from another company once

Caller: Hi, can I speak to Mr .....
Me: Speaking
Caller: could you confirm who you are by giving me your age, the first line of your address and your postcode
Me: huh?? Nope
Caller: but you need to give these details to confirm your identity
Me: you phoned me

Did the right thing asim. I would have done the same and told them where to go. If they are from virgin them they should know better than ask for password in any form.

I just string them along wasting their time, because I have so much time on my hands when they call. Like those technical whitepaper people who want to send me their whitepapers, the last 2 calls I had, I said I was deeply offended that they would want to send me white papers and not multiracial ones. The other one was about my printer being full of white paper and I'd only allow them to send me their report on blue paper.

It's genuine. They're always ringing me. I just got a massive discount for taking out TV (have 152meg and phone) they have been trying to get me to take TV for years. My bills going down and they're giving me TV XL :p

It is not genuine. I'm ashamed to say that I actually fell for it a couple of months ago as i'm used to Virgin ringing up with package offers over the years. The second i gave them two letters from my password they said someone would call me back and hung up, soon after i couldn't log into myvirginmedia and had to reset my password. A few days after that a letter came in the post that looked genuine saying there had been suspicious activity on my account and they had blocked it (it wasn't), the letter wanted me to phone a number to get it unblocked but the number was not a VM one. I called VM on 151 and they had no record of any of it.
