Hi,

I need to replace my current car, and as I know very little about cars, I hope that you can point me in the right direction :)

I'm looking for a car that has an excellent safety rating, reliable/robust, good for motorway and city driving, good MPG, comfortable, and easy to drive.

My budget is quite limited, probably less than £4K. I still need to save for this, so the lower the better.

Appreciate any help that you can offer :)

That's quite a lot of miles - do you do much in city miles? Something like a mondeo would be better for longer journeys but not as easy around town.

You're also into the mileage where diesel makes sense, but at a bad budget for them - modern diesels can give expensive issues at higher mileages. Older mechanical diesels can be bombproof but you'd be mad to spend as much as 4K on one.

Honda Civic is a good option too and you'd get a lot of Saab 9-3 for the money eg http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201506154343559 - I had one of those for a 18 months and 30k miles (taking it to 135k) and it didn't miss a single beat

Yeah, more miles than I'd like!

I do about 60 or so miles per week day, probably 1/3rd of that is in the city. The rest is on the motorways and A-roads, which can sometimes be quite congested.

Aside from that, I probably spend about 4000 miles driving in the city a year.

Thanks for your recommendations. Is there any particular manufactured year that I would be looking for with the ones you've recommended?

Not specifically and I'd always buy on overall condition and history. But generally speaking I'd go as new as possible and not worry about mileage too much - I've always found newer higher mileage cars better than older low mileage ones

Accord, as long as they've had the airbag recall done, otherwise if you crash the unfortunate person happening to be in the passenger seat will lose his/her's face. (The airbag is actually a grenade, releasing shrapnel when deployed)

Honda only decides to tell people 13 years after they started making the gen 7, and Honda Ponthir giving me a Jazz as a courtesy car :(
