Asus debuts new bus powered GTX950 cards

I was read review and surprised to see GTX 950 75W card has SLi. :eek: GTX 750 and 750 Ti did had no SLi connector. Really very impressive that the bus powered card can reached closer to GTX 960 performance when overclocked nearly 20% without issue. GTX 950 75W 2 way SLi should have similar performance as GTX 950 90W 2 way SLi games matched performance between GTX 970 and 980 accorded to Guru3D review.

I noticed GTX 950 75W is actually called GTX 950 LP or GTX 950 Low Power, it did not used same GM206-250-A1 chip for GTX 950 90W released back in August 2015.

GTX 950 LP used new chip GM206-251-A1 released last month in March 2016, both chips used exactly same spec but 2 different TDP 90W and 75W versions.

Nvidia had done amazed feats of engineered job on GTX 950 LP to kept same performance, they managed to reduced power down to 75W and removed the power connector. Radeon Technologies Group demoed Polaris 11 compared with GTX 950 weeks ago showed GTX 950 used 128W power and Polaris 11 used 86W power at same game settings which was thought very impressed at the time but after Nvidia launched GTX 950 LP, it can matched Polaris 11 performance while used only 75W power with no power connector. It surprised that GM206-251-A1 die still used same 228mm2 based on TSMC 28nm as 90W version, Polaris 11 die size is 230mm2 based on GlobalFoundry 14nm supposed used less than 75W power. It will be very interesting to see what Nvidia can do with GTX 1050 LP on TSMC 16nm in a year time. :)

It's nice but AMD managed to make a bus powered hd7850 years ago,which was faster than the GTX750TI but was not a cheap design.

AMD also had an R7 360E,which is around GTX750 level effiency.

Also you are wrong. The P11 is just over 100mm2 and the demo pegged the GTX950 system as using 140w at the wall and the P11 86w. That early sillicon 4 months ago was probably consuming around 50w and the card was only running at 800mhz too.

I checked TechpowerUP GPU database for bus power cards but HD 7850 Pitcairn was not listed so it did not existed and AMD never made a bus powered HD 7850. Maybe you meant Radeon HD 7750? Here was no AMD chips listed used 1024 shaders/64 TMUs/32 ROPs. I find it interesting that are GTX 960 OEM bus powered GM204 cards, they were designed for OEMs only but I never seen a picture of GTX 960 OEM card anywhere.

The 750ti filled a sweet spot position for non serious gamers, The best of the bunch in my opinion was EVGA's SC model which did not require additional power connectors and included the display port connector needed for G-sync. Although it's unlikely to be a card a gamer buying a G-sync monitor will consider it was the ultimate G-sync capable back-up card at the time.
Although just about every site promoted the 750 range as being G-sync ready it was only EVGA's SC & FTW cards that actually supported it.
I always intended to get the EVGA 750ti SC as my back up card if I went with a G-sync powered gaming system and the 950 looks like a very nice replacement if I still do.

I don't remember ever seeing a bus only 7850. I've owned quite a few 7850's and even cross-fired a pair once (my only dive into the dark and murky waters of dual card gaming). It's always been a strong contender in it's category.

This may be a really nice card from Asus and it will not be very demanding on it's cooler either which makes me worry about that less, I've not been very trusting of Asus graphics cards of late and that's a shame as I would like to do a motherboard, graphics card match-up and really like there motherboards (The latest Z170 Hero board looks like my kind of board). I had matching MSI Gaming motherboard and graphics card last time but now I have an Asus motherboard and a Sapphire card. Asus made an awful DCUII Hawaii card because the cooler seemed to be a handme down cooler that was not designed for the specific requirements of Hawaii. Then they went and released Grenada using the same cooler even though it had been one of the lowest rated Hawaii partner card's on the market, I really hoped DCUII would be a return to form but it seems not so much so when I do move to Zen or a future Intel I hope Asus get it together with the next gen gpu's to allow me to match up my components again.

You do realise the Polaris 11 demo was showing total system power usage right? The 950 in that demo would be using about 90W for the gpu and total system wattage was 150W which gives a system wattage without gpu of about 60W. So for the Polaris 11 it means usage of 86W(total)-60W(rest of system) = 26W for the gpu.



Maybe you should engage your brain before spouting rubbish and kissing Nvidia's read end.;)

No doubt Nvidia will also achieve a low power usage result for their next gen cards but some of the benefit will be negated by the addition of extra features such as hardware Async Compute (if they include it) that was removed from Maxwell.
