I need some of the above but I am a bit confused by some of the things I have read when Googling the subject.

I do some photography work as well as my full time job, weddings, events and the odd commercial job.

A quick search throws up people saying I can't get any as I wouldn't be classed as a professional, gut instinct tells me this is wrong.

I have run a few quotes off, Direct Line quoting £60 while others are quoting up to £400 for pretty much the same cover.

I know there are a few photographers on her, their advice would be welcome.

PL cover is only around £60 from brokers. I'm covered for 7k of kit on site and 5m PL (needed for trackside) for £160. Depending on the size of venues you might only need 1-2m. My last quote was through Simply Business, if you're being paid to shoot then under the eyes of insurance you're a pro.

Sorry to hijack your thread OP, but my dad is in a similar situation but a different trade.

He's posted on a different forum but keen to get peoples thoughts on the below;

I have had, in the past, public liability cover, but upon reading the policies I felt I was not getting anything that I was not already covered on, so haven't renewed recently.

I am in light haulage, I pick up goods, mainly palletised from point A and deliver to point B nationwide, simple as that. A fair proportion of the goods I carry are classed as hazardous, I am fully qualified with an ADR licence and insured to carry dangerous goods for hire and reward.

It has been suggested to me by an insurance broker (obviously with potential new business in mind) that I do need PL liability, I asked why, "well what if you ran somebody/something over at their premises"?. My reply was that I imagine my normal van insurance would cover me. They then suggested "if you had an accident which was your fault and the goods (especially the dangerous ones) escaped and caused damage and/or injury your van insurance would not cover you and therefore you require PL"

I don't get that as my van insurers are perfectly aware of my business and what I carry, so why wouldn't they cover me in the event of an accident? I pay a highly increased premium to carry dangerous goods, if they're not covering me why do I pay extra? I have separate goods in transit to cover the value of the load.

Thoughts appreciated.

Edit:- I will be ringing my "normal" broker tomorrow, but sometimes I feel other people's thoughts could be more beneficial than those within their own trade so to speak!

Thanks in advance if anyone can help or advise.

If you're in business as photographer you need PL, even if just part time.

If you're not in business then the PL cover built into your home contents cover will protect you whilst doing photography.

If you take money you're a professional, so you need PL insurance, you should also consider professional indemnity insurance.

Mine has lapsed purely because I've not been working for the last 9 months (full time job but not pushing the photography), however I was with http://www.aaduki.com/ and had PL and PI.

Just checking my policy:

Just to clarify the difference between the two. Public Liability is when you are negligent for an accident during the course of your work. So for the photographer it would be leaving a cable trailing for someone to fall over, backing into and knocking over the wedding cake.

Professional indemnity is where you exercise poor professional judgement. So your photos are overexposed, you fail to back up the cards etc. Basically if you sell your services as a professional but don't perform as one you are liable.

In reality you should have both
