So its been a long time since a built a new computer, about 6 years and now the time as come to start again. Project Overkill v3 is about to commence. Why Overkill v3 and not v1 or v2? Well, I planned on water cooling back in 2008 so I bought a MM U2 UFO with all good intentions, but that never happened. It got the name Overkill due to the fact that the case is a massive 18" cube..... air cooled, far too big for a even the largest of heat pipe CPU cooler.

Back then the system was an Asus Maximus Formula SE with a Q6600 overclocked to 3.2 on air and 4 GB of Geil 6400 DDR2 sporting a Nvidia 8800 GTX.

Overkill v2 then became my current setup, an Asus Rampage III Extreme with an i7 950 at 3.77 on air and 6GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 with an ATi 5870.

The new v3 is going to consist of

Asus Rampage V Extreme USB 3.1 Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 EATX Motherboard

i7-6800K 3.40GHz (Broadwell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80671I76800K)

Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Quad Channel Kit (CMD32GX4M4C3000C)

Asus GeForce GTX 1080 "Founders Edition" 8192MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card

2x 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive

and...

RayStorm 750 AX360 WaterCooling Kit :D

All ordered this afternoon so should be here late next week do to "fleg season" here in Northern Ireland. Ill be sure to post up some pics during the way!

This particular U2 UFO case does not support the mobo tray being placed horizontally, however this hasnt stopped me from doing so. I have got a piece of 1m 20mm x 3mm aluminium flat bar and bent it into shape. I have sprayed it gloss black to match the case.

Pre mobo tray mod and new gear, believe it or not, this was a tidy clean setup when it was first built. Over the years its seen some neglect and removal of HDDs etc

Up on the desk where it will have its new home, up off the floor rather than sucking in dust. Starting to remove components that are going to be surplus to requirement, the iMon was bought mainly as a bay filler and a novelty that was never really used either.

Some shots of the new layout, I personally think that with the mobo this orientation it will be easier to run the hoses between the block and the rad etc.

The custom support for the mobo tray as this model of the U2 UFO was never designed to have the motherboard horizontal

seems a bit cluttered.

This is pre upgrade/tidy up, give it time, I'm aiming to have this as aesthetically pleasing as possible considering the fact that its a windowed case on 3 of the 6 sides and there is not much hope for it being a show pony as there is limited places to hide cables without them being visible from any angle other than "front on".

Update 13-07-16

* New Samsung 850's and adapters arrived there this afternoon.

* I'm going to ditch all of the mech drives bar one of the 500's (the other one died yesterday), there is just no need for the 2x 250's as I have an 8TB (4x 2TB Baracuda's) server for backups, storage and streaming.

* All other kit should be here tomorrow

Well, this build log didn't really become a build log or go to plan but it is all fitted now and fully up and running.

I had an issue with the mobo but this was quickly resolved by OcUK and a new board dispatched same day. The cooling was also a bit of a PITA as the case holes for the fans didn't mate up with the rad but this was an easy work around. Still need to sort out my wire tuck but other than that, its more or less done. Ill be sure to post up some pictures and what not.
