I imagine this will cause some impassioned discussion here. Thoughts?

I still think cyclists should perhaps think about the kinds of roads they are riding on, coming round a blind bend, even at 40 in a 60 could lead to an event whereby a driver can't physically get 1.5m away from a cyclist, and wouldn't be able to stop in the few meters since rounding the apex.

Indeed I know of roads where even if nothing was coming the other way, I'd not be able to get 1.5m away from a cyclist.

On clear, straight(ish), wide roads however, yes give plenty of room, it's hardly like a cyclist in this situation is an inconvenience.

Can you show us these tiny roads?

I cycle and drive and I know what you mean, giving 1.5 meters is not always possible.

simply slowing down and over-taking with as much space as you can is reasonable the problem is that MANY drivers carry on doing 40 or 60 mph while over-taking a cyclist when there's very little space.

I cycle daily through one road, cars parked both ways and it's a two way road.

80% of it has enough space for one car with 30ish cm each side but I have drivers coming at me full blow and I have nowhere to go, it is scary to say the least and a simple mistake from their side or a move from my side and I'd be seriously injured or dead.

Surely then you're driving too fast. You should be able to stop in the distance you can see.

It's just social noise frankly. There will a few people stopped, but it will do nothing in the long term. It was the same with lane hogging and pulling over people who sit in overtaking lane when it's perfectly clear inside them. The motorway hasn't changed after Police forces targeting that. You can't change a culture with a few coppers pulling over the odd one or two. Mobile phone use should be an example of that. I think if we had a 3 hits and you're out rule Policing of our roads would be so much better. How many times do we see a TV show where local scum is pulled over drunk, no licence, insurance, carrying drugs, knives and speaking in chav only to find out this is his 23423423432432 offence and he is well known to Police.

In housey world it would be different....

"Here we see Wayne pulled over for driving drunk, without insurance and tax for the 3rd time. He has been tasered and is now being taken to Housey's Island of Doom for full body shaving and throwing in a big pit with the other Wayne's. Happily we won't ever see Wayne again, or Waynetta who was with him as she was for the 3rd time carrying stolen items. She too will be taken to the Island and thrown in another pit never to be seen again."

THAT would deal with crime....eventually.

I generally try to fully cross the road centreline marking when overtaking to make sure I give clearance. On B roads, it is not usually possible to give a full 1.5m
(The police officer shown would have his arms wide spread and measured wrist to wrist at least).

I give bikes plenty of room, no reason not to even when they are being unobservant eejits. No point hurting someone or damaging something. Just go past and get on with your day is my advice.

You appear to be suggesting that the issue of close passes is predominantly limited to blind bends on national speed limit roads. It manifestly is not.

Fan of Harry enfield by any chance? I don't know why this country is so lenient on people who take the ****.

Theyve been running police cyclists and pulling people who get to close around bromsgrove and droitwitch for months now....

Using a phone whilst driving is illegal too, but look how common it is. Another one of those poxy campaigns that will never amount to anything because you actually need traffic police to enforce it!

Interesting to see 'widely considered to be 1.5m', I've never seen or heard that before, only 'as much room as you'd give a car'
