7850 screen flickering issue

Greetings all,

Been a long while since I spent many a happy hour overclocking my Barton core mobile 2500 chip (yes...I'm old!)

These days I run a lounge PC which is mostly used by the kids for gaming and for movies etc on an evening.

For a while I 've been having screen flickering issues with my MSI 7850 2GB card.

This only happens in 2D mode, I have no issues when gaming at all. It is really annoying me now.

I have searched the forums and the web and found a lot of information about various fixes for this, none of which seem to work.

So far I have tried...

New card drivers (using driver cleaner too)
New MB bios
MSi seem to think I already have the latest VGA bios (from 2013!)
DVI and HDMI cables
Different TV's
removing and re-seating GFX card and memory
having a good clean of the fans and heatsinks etc.

Finally I tried to mess around with 2D & 3D clocks in afterburner but only succeeded in repeatedly crashing my machine.

I don't really want to shell out on new GFX if there is a way of fixing this, especially as there doesn't seem to be any budget champion cards these days... Paid £90 for this one and about £110 for the 5770 before it. Bang for buck ratio seems to have plummeted...along with the exchange rate :-p

If anyone has any bright ideas or come across this any info would be appreciated.

sorry for bringing up such old school tech on the GFX forum

Cheers!

I have a 7870 and have no problems at all with the 16.7.1 drivers.

I did upgrade to newer drivers and had loads of problems, with crashing and flickering on the desktop,so i went back to older drivers and all is ok.

Try 16.7.1 see if that helps.

Thanks Karik,

Sadly having given this a try, if anything it seems the same. But I don't think that is really down to the drivers, the more I see it, it looks like the card is slowly dying :(

I started noticing it around the time that Windows 10 did the first big update (about 6-7 months ago I think?) and attributed it to driver issues that would settle down, and tbh it did seem slightly better in the few weeks after.

It has been getting worse over the last 6-8 weeks and started affecting videos and web browsing quite badly.

Strange that it only manifests itself in 2D though, I would have thought that 3D would have been affected too.

I guess I was hoping someone here might have had similar issues as OC sold a boatload of these cards.

I think I might go down the route of a complete re-install before giving up completely, you never know!

At least if all fails I will NEED a new card :)
