but before you suggest a car, it has to be a family sized car. And im talking mondeo sized, not focus sized.

the ST200 is about 7 secs, so doesnt make the cut.

used '03 Impreza STI makes the cut if bought privately

Obviously we're also talking Evo 7/8 Territory as well.

but anything else this fast for this cheap ?

im struggling to think of anything else.

im using the 0-60 as a yardstick for what sort of performance im after. as already stated the STI is 5.something or other. So im not fussed as to exactly what time.

M5 might be worth a look, but arent they money pits when old ?

and arent most M3s coupe's. i deffo need 4 doors.

for 15k id be looking at two scenarios.. a comfortable fast car.. and a track weapon...

15k might just about get you a VXT... or it could get you something like an M3...

running 2 cars is out of the question

ill have a hard enough time paying for servicing insurance and running costs on something fast without having to pay for another car on top

all E46 M3's are coupes IIRC. it was the E36 which had a 4 door option.

plus my M5 is quite a lot bigger inside than my friends E46 M3.

M5's are expensive enough to run when new! petrol is quite interesting :(
otherwise a well maintained one should be fine, will just need to be a bit more careful with £15k budget as thats the cheaper end of the market.

scoobys aint cheap to run either

how would you compare the costs of the two ?

Why the interest in 0-60? Pub talk? :p

My old Scoob would do it in 4.8 seconds, but after 60mph it wasn't exactly living the dream. 1/4 terminal was only around 95/96 mph, pants.

tbh i very rarely get or want the chance to go above 60 except on motorways. And on motorways i just cruise at 80 so i dont really need the performance there. Id just like to be able to have a bit of fun round the twisties whilst still being within the limit. Plus having the power to win a few traffic light grand prix's of course ;)

Vauxhall Zafira VXR or the older GSi

OK, so it wont do 60 in 5 seconds, but it does tick all the boxes as far as family and practicality go. It also has a bit of get up and go when you want it.

I've got a picasso atm, as its great for carting around all the stuff that toddlers need. Pushchairs, nappys, wipes, pottys, umpteen clothes changes etc.. Im on about changing in a year or two, by which time hell have outgrown all those thiings and i wont need as much space.

Presumably you want a family car beause you have a family

And with that being the case perhaps you should consider an ordinary car in which your less likely to get the impulse to do something silly and put them in danger...

i drive to and from work everyday by myself. Im perfectly capable of restraing myself with my family in the car. How i drive to work and how i drive with family on-board are completely different

Yes it is less than that but unfortunately it's nowhere near 5 seconds.

Not an awful lot is beyond the usual tuned Impreza etc - certainly nothing that will be suitable for MrLOL becuase I remember when he bought his Picasso he told us he absolutely needed the space and flexibility of a Mini MPV, and they don't do those that do 0-60 in 5 seconds.

as above, im changing the car when i wont need to cart all the baby stuff round. Any parent will tell you that modern pushchair (especially comfy ones) take up a huge ammount of room.

You'd be much better off with a smaller engined RWD car like an mx5 if you really want fun on the back roads sub 60. Ok I know ya need a saloon but the scoob has too much power and traction for what you claim you are after.

needs to be 4 door family sized car. Mx5 etc.. are totally out of the question as im going to struggle to afford anything decent, let alone 2 cars.

i quite like the forrester that scooby bloke has on here, its quite a mother

pistonheads for sale section says it all

140 odd imprezas

1 forrester

they're not the most easily obtainable car are they ? and arent the STIs all grey imports ?

Toyota Soarer 2.5 TT - Just got mine for £2k. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, delimited they'll do 170 mph and they have large rear seats. Basically a 4 seater Supra.

Needs to be four door

Dont get me wrong Im not attacking AWD, it would be my choice over FWD anyday.
Its just very shallow to base car choice on 0-60 time, Im simply trying to expand the original posters thinking.

On my daily drive I use the motorway and so 60-80mph performance is more important than 0-60 to me.
Trust me I know, its lacking in my car and I really notice it. :(

i dont do much motorway driving. Most of my driving is done on roads with 30/40/50 limits. Thus a car that can do quick standing starts (good 0-60) and with good grip levels (4wd) is ideal for me. And when i do drive on the motorway, ill never need the acceleration, as i spend most of my time cruising at 80 in the outside lane moving over ocassionaly to let BMWs past lol

and i dont see the problem in requiring a car that has quick acceleration. I want a car thats fast, and 0-60 is a good yardstick of this. If any1 knows anywhere that keeps a range of mid speed times (40-60 etc..) then ill gladly have a look. But manufacturers dont seem to keep this kind of info.

anyway, my shortlist looks something like this :

'03 Impreza STI
E39 M5
Early Audi S4

had a look at forrester 2.5 XT. Just doesnt do it for me in the same way the M5/S4/STI do.

Found this on auto trader :

E39 M5 :

media

2000 BMW M5 5.0 V84 Doors, Manual 6 speed, Saloon, Petrol, 116,000 miles, Le Mans Blue, MOT-09-2006, 1 Owner. Full Caramel Nappa Leather, uprated stereo. Massive specification including climate control, cruise control, etc etc. "M5" private plate. Full Main Dealer service history, this is a one driver car from new. (Stock No. 66) Portway Motor Centre. The UK's Largest Vehicle Brokers £13,950

and loving this impreza on pistonheads :

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/64454.htm

And only 1 S4 on auto trader under 25k. And that was in a horrible navy colour :(. Only 7 results found for an S4 in total. None on the audi network under 30k. Looks like im not exactly going to be spoilt for choice for S4s

with the current state of the market for used Imprezas he's going to have to seriously cut the price to shift it no matter how nice it is

what sort of price should he be selling at

notice the JDM STI in the link above this is having trouble selling too.
