Hey Guys,

Got an issue with a ~2.5 year old HP tm2 laptop. It was working fine off the battery yesterday but i switched it on today and the battery meter read "0% availiable (plugged in, not charging)". If i remove the AC adaptor, it instantly dies so its definately not getting juice from the battery any more, but it runs off AC perfectly fine. The battery was replaced about a year ago with a genuine HP battery, not a cheap knockoff. At first i thought the battery had died, but then i fished the old battery out of the attic and it does exactly the same thing again - "0% availiable (plugged in, not charging)" and instantly dying on removing the plug. I'm now wondering if theres a problem with the laptop itself.

Have tried a few basic troubleshooting tips like cleaning the contacts and rebooting without battery, uninstalling anything battery related in device manager etc. to no avail.

One thing worth mentioning is that the laptop has a small LED that glows orange when charging and white when fully charged. Since this morning, it has been glowing white at all times the AC has been plugged in, regardless of the laptops power state or battery.

Symptoms match my old Dell with a dead battery. If it isn't the battery itself, surely it'll be something like the charging circuit, which could be terminal on an older model?

Ditto, on my 4 year Dell Vostro 1320 with second battery. However one day my battery just started saying 10% charging, then charged to 100% and has been fine ever since (giving about 4 hours run time).

Just in case anyone was wondering, I took a gamble and ordered a new battery. It arrived today and appears to be working just fine.

I can only conclude that the other two batteries are completely dead, although I find it strange that one of them had not been used in a while and was known to be working (ish) last time I used it.
