I am so fed up with updates!

I swear 50% of the time my PS3 spends on is spent showing a progress bar! I don't game much on my PS3 so every time I play it requires an update, and one which can't be done in the background!

Then game updates which can't be done in the background! All I want is to play some Uncharted (which I just picked up) and I now have to wait for the worlds largest system update, and then there will obviously be game updates.

Grrr. Download things overnight you stupid console!

I wish it did them either in the background or over night. The Wii downloads updates in its own time, why can't the PS3? And if it does need to download something, do it in the background so I can do other things at the same time.

Obviously were in a culture now where there will always be updates, but the PS3s way of handling then is just frustrating.

The PS4 announcement hinted heavily at this.

But its not next Gen at all. Background downloads for games have been on PC for years, and even the child of the current Gen consoles (Wii) manages to download system updates while on standby. Its as if Sony have a fettish for progress bars.

Wait, you just got Uncharted, and annoyed that a new game to your PS3 has updates for it? LOL :p

You do realise you can play it offline to avoid the updates if its that much of annoyance or cancel the update if its just a SP game. I assumed that was obvious, I guess not...

ps3ud0

No issue with the game update, it was 13mb and worked almost instantly. It still can't be done in the background though.

Its the system ones that annoy me. I dont use my PS3 much, so almost every time I turn it on there is an update that I have to wait to download.

Updates are updates, thats fine, I just wish I didn't have to stair at a progress bar waiting for them to happen.

The trouble is the PS+ solution isn't any good for people like me. I own 3 PS3 games at the moment, and yesterday was the first time I had turned on my PS3 for well over a month.

If you game all the time then PS+ is great, but if you are a casual gamer who just plays the odd title now and then its no use, yet your the type of person most frustrated by the updates.

I've got GT5, but not played it for almost a year. I assume I will have to book a day off work to patch it should I decide to play it again :p

I'm on shoddy ADSL that averages about 1.5mbit!

It's only going to get worse. The PS4 launch made it sound like a fibre line would be a requirement.

i paid £30 for plus, also you get 4-7 games free every month, as well as discounts, exclusive access to betas or earlier access, free 1 hour trials, etc, etc.

for £30 a year you get a lot more than auto updates.

Not really an option for a casual gamer who only plays on the PS3 occasionally.

Unfortunately the situation would be no different with a 360 though. Game updates would be quicker (although quite often they make you download large updates manually) but the 360 still gets its fair share of system software updates and in my experience, they're no quicker to download and install than the PS3 ones.

If you seldom use something, you can't really expect it not to have updates when you do eventually come round to turning it on.

The Xbox downloads happen in the background. Well the game ones do.
