Following on from lying about the age of his 5 series, the wifes boss has bought himself an X5, with duff navigation.

The drive accepts the "update" cd, runs the program, tells me that the system is already up to date.
Put in the nav dvd and it just sits there saying "no disc", so i'm guessing the laser has packed up.

I've seen repair services on ebay for around £150, but are there any cheaper options? (ie, what dvd drive can i buy and rip the laser out of?)

He says he needs the nav done soon as he off back to iraq in a couple weeks and he's taking the car...

(i'm guessing the seller was a stand up guy, it's running on 4 brand new tyres. 4 of the biggest pieces of chinese crap i've seen in my life, literally, didn't know they made snot tyres to fit those sizes)

Is it a mk4 DVD nav? If so the complete laser unit you need is called "DVD M3 4.6", I've had a quick Google but the price of them seems to have gone up a lot lately - they used to be about £80-£100. It's 4 screws to replace it.

Here is a guide to just replacing the laser, which will be your cheapest option:

Edit: But yes Fox makes a very good point lol

You're trying to apply logic to the guy, he's a complete muppet. He said he'd been after an X5 for ages, but was put off as a lot of them were automatics .....

Cheers Wicksta, looks like that's the cheapest option. Then i'll sting him for £150 ;) (scrub that, looks like both suppliers of the laser are out of stock :()

Must admit, the dvd drive looks like a ******s special, not something you'd find in a bmw.

Why is he taking his own car to iraq? I wouldn't fancy driving a normal car out there, civilian contractors still regularly get hit. Why would he need sat nav anyway sureley he will be travel with security contractors who will do the driving etc and have their own nav equipment.

Is he planning to drive around iraq use turn my turn from the sat nav, not taking into account the daily intelligence about hotspots and places to avoid, without any security, in an unarmored car with 4 cheapo tyres on it? He must be crazy tbh

Did i mention he's a muppet?

He took his 5 series last time (actually he flew down and got one of his cousins to bring the car)

hehe, turns out he took the dvd unit last night and managed to flatten the battery in process (sounds like they got the battery from the same outfit that supplied the tyres)

Wife just called, his car is blocking the lane behind the shop as it still won't start! He called out the AA and they wanted a few quid as he doesn't have Home Start on his policy, so he's getting a friend to tow the car away from the shop so he can call them out again.

The guy is special.

Sounds to me like the making of a future dream used BMW :p ...It'll have an interesting assortment of El Cheapo tyres, a bodged navigation system, a dodgy battery ...possibly a knackered torque converter from being towed. And a bit of wear and tear from Iraq's roads ...which to be honest probably aren't all that different to some of Birmingham's, just dustier I should think.

He might even pick up a bit of genuine RPG damage and some complimentary bullet holes! ...it'll be a 'gangstar' special in Brum in a year or so I bet.
