Why do companies use 0845, 0870 numbers?

I see overclockers use the numbers

Tel*: 0871 200 5052 - RMA Tel*: 0871 200 5053

These come back as stoke on trent area numbers 01782576675 and 01782576672. Do overclockers have multiple offices / call centers

Most businesses will have specific departmental numbers, hence the multiples. 08** numbers can help present a professional image, as well as minimising disruption if the business has to change it's regional number.

Non-geographical numbers, hark back to the days before most of us had vast amounts of free national calls etc, where phoning numbers outside of your local area, cost an arm and a leg, at which time, 08** numbers, were very handy. At that time, given the choice between calling a company in Stoke-On-Trent at national rates, was a lot less appealing than using a "local" rate number.

These days of course, its a lot different, but still most people (I say most, not all) would rather call an 08** number, than call direct, as they perceive an 08** number as being more professional.

As to why OCUK have different numbers for different parts of the company.. simple.. they're different parts of the company, just as my parents used to have two phone numbers for the house in which they lived, one for the 'family' and one for the 'business'.

Or would you rather press 1 for Sales, 2 for Returns, 3 to speak to an advisor, 4 for more options, 5 for less options, 6 to hear these options again, 7 to be put on hold for an hour?

...to make money, simple.

I work security for a company and I get calls in the security office all day, because its the only 0114 number they can find asking to be transferred to the customer service line, however there is no "trans" button on the phone and I was never shown how to transfer people anyway lol.

People phone up saying they're not paying the premium rate numbers for 0844 or 0870 then spend 15 minutes bitching at me saying it should be illegal lol. I just refer them to the customer services numbers and say "I just work in security"

How did you find out where the 0871 number routes to?
