0dB Mode on a GTX 980

Hi guys

The Asus GeForce GTX 980 DirectCU II OC Strix has a 0dB mode, meaning it's (pretty much) silent up until the card starts to heat up. The problem is, it doesn't look like it's going to be here for a while and it's a good bit more expensive than the other ones.

Given that this card can do it, is it possible to get the other cards to do it too with some sort of change in the fan profile?

The reference coolers are supposed to be pretty good, and some of the third party solutions are supposedly better, so I'm assuming the coolers themselves would be able to accomplish it, it just seems to be a matter of telling the card to do it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I think most cards have a limit to how low they can go (usually around 26%). But you can probably get a similar effect by creating and flashing a custom bios. You might be able to get with flashing a STRIX bios onto another card but it'd probably be safer to dump your current bios and modify it, you may need to wait a while for bios editors to update to work with the new cards though.

If thats the card you want then wouldn't it be worth waiting for it? Assuming you can use whatever you've got at the moment. :D

I have my 290's profile set to 0 upto 70 degrees. . Which is good enough to keep games like ddiablo3 silent with regards to the gpu. My feeling is your probably paying the vendor to do this automatically.

MSI Gaming fans sit idle until 50c.

Galax twin fan version has 1 fan running very slow and the other one only kicks in when it heats up.

Having said that, twin 970's would be better money, you are paying a large whack extra for very little gain with the 980.

Different voltage regulators=BOOM!

For most users a custom fan profile in MSI afterburner will allow them to keep the fan quiet enough until they start using the card for gaming.

And as stated other cards have started implementing similar features.

For some reason ASUS cards are consistently the most expensive on this website. Even for reference cards.

Yes, in fact it's been done already with the non Strix 780's, when the Strix launched people were a bit upset that cards like the ROG Poseidon and ROG Matrix couldn't do it despite having roughly as good coolers (or better in the case of the Poseidon).

Basically other ASUS cards have a minimum fan speed of 20%, what you need to do is dump the BIOS, edit it and alter the minimum speed to 0%, then flash the edited BIOS to the card, then you can set a custom fan curve and have the fans off below a set temperature (BE CAREFUL WITH THIS!).

Thanks for the info guys!

I really don't fancy messing with the BIOS, so I'll leave that one out (for now).

If the MSI card will leave the fans off below 50c, is it possible to mess with this a bit to get it to stay off until the card reaches a higher temperature (i.e. 70c) through MSI Afterburner or some of the other ones?

I think I've actually decided to go for 970 SLI.

Now to figure out if I can make the MSI fans stay off at a temperature higher than 50c. Anyone tried it?

The requirement is fanless at idle. My perception of noise is unfortunately very high, so fans running at all while its idling isn't an option for this particular purchase.

All I really need to know is whether or not I can make the MSI cards accept a higher temperature threshold to keep the fans off. There is only one other fan running in the system so the idle temps can get a bit high.

Most likely not even with some sort of custom bios plus 50c isn't even that hot so your fan would keep on coming on which is very annoying.

If you want a quiet as possible system I really wouldn't recommend going sli.
