Looking to buy some tools (olds were stolen) and as Ive been given a bit more money than last time splashing out..

Do I want 1/2 or 3/8 socket/torx sockets + ratchet set?

Obv the size is different but whats the pros/cons of either?

Size wise 3/8 will go up to 22/24mm whereas 1/2" is good for 36mm+

Aside from that it's a bit of a personal preference really. I personally prefer 3/8" kit for most stuff, got a good 1/2" set though which is useful for suspension stuff and tight bolts when the 3/8" kit won't get it undone (ratchets/breaker bars are longer and sturdier).

I'd probably buy 3/8" though if I only had to have 1. That said- check to see if halfords have the £100 sets on sale again, for £100 it's not a bad deal and you'll have 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 sets for the money.

It's too easy to overtighten and snap fragile bolts with a 1/2" set. I use a 3/8" set for any bolts I think are a little weak.

Really:eek:, never had problems with 3/8" and suspension parts.

If you are going to undo any larger bolts e.g. wheel nuts, hub nuts, suspension fixings etc. then you want a 1/2" set, though ideally you'd have both. 3/8" is more useful in tight spaces and for smaller fastenings. Make sure that the set comes with wobble drives (specially shaped ends on the extensions, not the universal joints), they are invaluable.

Hmm not sure what to get now :(

Saw the set on Halfords for £100 (down from 180) however I dont have enough money for that and the female torx set (which is £15 from halfords) :(

Do you have a specific application for the star sockets? If so I'd say get the basic kit, and buy one or two star sockets as you need them. Don't skimp on the basics.

I have the 150 piece set to keep in my car, and it's been totally bomb proof so far and survived a lot of abuse, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

3/8th for everyday use here, with 1/2 and 3/4 inch for the bigger stuff. Impact sockets and big pullbars a must...
:D
