At title really... need some help finding a nice little car for my friend. She wants something small, enginewise has to be small for insurance purposes too.

My suggestions so far have been:

VW Polo 1.4
Pug 306 1.4
Pug 206 1.4
Ren Clio 1.2

and then I'm fresh out of ideas. She doesn't want a Fiesta or a KA, she's not allowed Rovers... mother has a vendeta against them I think!

So what does the might OCUK crowd think?

LMAO, that's the most stupid thing I've ever heard.

Her mum deserves a few slaps tbh :D

Out of that list, I reckon I'd go with the Clio... assuming it's a newer model. From my experience, it's much better than the Pug 206. Can't comment on the Polo though (again, guessing it's a newer model) but the Mk3 my friend had was dire.

You should just be able to squeeze a Yaris for that budget. Great little car, my girlfriends had hers for about 12 months now. Her first car and she loves it!

She calls it Yuri

Seat Ibiza mechanically a polo underneath so you have VW reliablity. a mate had a 1996 one and just got a 04 plate replacement excellent cars.

Vauxhall Corsa, cheap parts

Handy considering how often they break.

*shudders at the thought of ever having to go in a corsa again

Another vote for the Toyota Yaris, I learnt to drive in one and it has the Toyota reliablity :)

CORSA!!!! tbh, great cars:p

No, they are awful. The Corsa B is even worse and this is the sort of Corsa you'd usually expect to get for under £2k.

Poor handling, poor interior quality, average reliability, they have absolutely zero redeedming features beyond 'they look cute' which do not apply equally to other superminis in this class.

The sub £2k supermini class is pretty much ruled by the Ford Fiesta, and the Nissan Micra. For pure A-B, the Micra is by far the best choice - the reliability is astounding the interior whilst not amazing is at least well built. But for a little more fun, the Fiesta is fundamentally reliable, decent enough inside, has a great 1.25 litre engine and a brilliant chassis making it one of the best superminis to drive.

Also worthy of consideration is the 106 and the Saxo - unfortunately the build quality is rather... not that great, but this is in-part redeemed by the fact they excel in other areas - good fun to drive, at least, and the interiors are actually not that bad.

The Corsa, well, it's an also-ran I'm afraid. The only support you'll really find for the Corsa are from those who bought one without really knowing what else was around, or had one bought for them, and are out to convince themselves they've got the best choice.

On its own, there is nothing fundamentally BAD about a Corsa - it will, within reason, take you from A to B. However, when you look at the other options out there, why bother?

I was about to lay into the frankly pathetic 1.2 8v engine, but then remember this is cancelled out by the existence of the Micra's weedy 1.0 and the Fiestas simply apalling 1.3.

At least I justified my opinion :p

Hey I dont think they are the best car's in the world, but tbh for a first car it is pretty damn good! I have never had anyone had any problems with a corsa, even the old types! So i dont think they are rubbish and will brake down all the time, they are cute looking i think anyway, the 1.2 engine is a great little runner and will do a first time driver fine. I wouldnt recommend a corsa to anyone who isnt looking for a first car!:p

After all there are a lot worse cars out there!

I'm not talking about the 1.2 16v you've got - I've no experience of that whatsoever - I'm talking about the 1.2 8v in the Corsa B. It's not a great little runner, it's horrid.

In the supermini segment... errrrr, name one? :p

His point is, compared to the corsa B, theres a lot better cars out there, so theres no reason to own one over other super mini's for the same amount of money.

The corsa C on the other hand, is a different story.

I'd put the Punto about equal.

Deawoo Matiz? Hmmm, also completely awful. But ridiculously cheap, you'd get a far newer one than you would Corsa, and awful + new > awful + old.

Keep trying :D

My missus's Corsa is the 1.0 12v, costs £1100 for a T reg on 60k.

im very impressed with it tbh. Cheaper insurance too compared to the other cars we looked at, car dynamics arn't the priority in this case. Shares chassis with the Nova and Tigra so theres plenty of parts about for them.

Its regularly gets 50mpg and an ideal way to get no claims built up for a girl who thinks she has a nice car. Didn't like the Micra as it has no style and her ex had a fiesta... thats the reasoning behind womens choices, you do have experience of girls dont you Fox?

Fox i really wish I could have had the opportunity to drive as many cars as you aswell? :p
