What would the difference in performance be between a 95 corsa and an 03 astra, both 1.4 16V?

I'm looking at astras/ focus' to buy, and I saw this astra but it's only a 1.4. Now the corsa I used to drive was a 1.4 which was adequate but in a bigger car how will the same size engine fair?

I ideally want a 1.6/8 but this car looks in quite good nick and it's cheaper than other 1.6/8 astras/focus' I've been looking at. Plus it would save on tax/insurance/petrol as well so might be worth a punt....What do you think?

Thanks.

I would want a slightly bigger engine tbh but you could get away with it.

us it would save on tax/insurance/petrol
I really don't think economy would be better over a 1.6/1.8 because the engine would be under more strain. I used to drive a 1.1 Hyundai getz which barely managed 30mpg on motorways but my mondeo can do 40mpg easily.

Edit:
Fuel consumption (urban) 29.4 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 49.6 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 39.8 mpg
0 - 62 mph 11.5 seconds
Top speed 112 mph
Cylinders 4
Valves 16 v
Engine power 90 bhp
Engine torque 92.2 lbs/ft

Having said that its not thatt bad.

Yeah, he needs a 1.4 focus, they are better in every department to any other car ever made, I hear that Lotus's new F1 car is just a 1.4 Focus with a body kit... :D

On a more serious note, I would urge you get something with a bigger engine if you are looking at that size of car..

The Focus 1.4/Astra 1.4 is woefully slow, and I mean woefully...

On whether to get Focus/Astra, well the Focus is normally a much sharper drive to the Astra, the SRi astra's are quite passable, btu in reality at the bottom end of things (like a 1.4), you preference on colour and interior styling and overall condition would probably lead to a more meaningful choice..

How is a Micra or Clio better than an Astra? Clios are the most plasticy cars going, for a start.

The 1.6 isn't a complete slouch but I imagine the 1.4 would feel rather gutless in the Astra. Probably fine in the Corsa though.

I had a 1.4 Astra hire car absolutely ages ago in Madeira. It was a 2003 back when they were brand new.

It was horrible. Madiera is not a flat place either, the 1.4 litre engine was pathetic.

A friend of mine has a 1.4 Astra, albeit from 1995, and complains about how slow it is. However, I have no experience of a 1.4 Corsa so can't compare.

1.4 in the Astra is woefully underpowered. 1.4 in the Corsa isn't. You're talking 2 seconds quicker to 60 if you want a figure on it.
I definitely wouldn't buy one anyway.
