So, almost a year to the day I did this exact same thread and ultimately decided to stick with my current setup (i4790K and GTX970) to wait until an upgrade would be more impactful. A year later I now see a £300 AMD processor can offer more than double my CPU in performance benchmarks, so am considering my options (again).

My current basket is:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,329.92 (includes shipping: £0.00)

I'll admit, I didn't research hugely into this...

Some of my thought processes:
  1. Don't really need PSU/case/monitor/kb/mouse/speakers as all will be reused.
  2. Ultimately there will be 3 hard drives, have a 1GB SSD sitting around waiting to be used that I picked up during an offer.
  3. £1,500 isn't a target to aim for, more of a maximum :D
  4. 32GB of RAM is quite possibly excessive, but don't want to be in a position in the future where a RAM upgrade would be useful but I can't easily find any as they are no longer in mass production.
  5. Gaming is the main use for the PC, and I use two 27" Dell monitors (although only one for the actual gaming, the other is used to stream videos/tv/etc.).
As ever, I defer to the wisdom and experience of OCUK in these matters, suggestions/questions are gratefully received!

Edit: currently I'm £170 better off than last year too :D

Few notes:

-drop the ssd and get a sabarent rocket
-for the price, you'd be better getting a 2070s
-you can get the os for £2/3 off a well know Bay site

Cheers for suggestions, OCUK don't seem to do Sabrent so looking elsewhere. In terms of 2070s any idea if KFA2 are a decent brand?

What about a CPU cooler or you got one already or 3700 comes with one?

The CPU is the retail version so should come with a cooler (although it has been 5 years since I last did this!)

Unfortunately they don't stock it, but a well known rainforest site does.

As for the kfa2 cards, I've just bought one and it's in the boot of my car waiting to be installed after work. I have it on good authority that they're solid, quiet and quick. One review said the one click overclocking had the boost clock to 1900mhz.

Let me know your thoughts on the kfa2 card. I've now realised that it could be sensible to wait a month and see if any price reductions for Black Friday so will give me time to research.

In other news your Sabrent Rocket suggestion now has me thinking about getting 2 of them, one for OS, one for games that I want really fast, and have my other 1TB SSD on SATA for not quite as fast games :(
