1.5v AA rechargeable batteries?

Sorry to post this in here but I know you guys will use rechargeables and I am too scared to post in the mental asylum known as GD

I have a kids toy which will not work with rechargeables, does not even switch on.

I think it needs a full 1.5v owing to the motors it uses, any way around this?

Sounds odd as the voltage in the alkaline will drop below 1.2v probably quite quickly, are you sure the nimh's you're using are charged/not faulty etc?
