1.8T Checksum Error APR remap

Hi chaps

Took my Octavia vRS to be remapped at Performance driven in Taunton a few years ago, was happy with the APR map. A year after that I had the following fault:

16985 - Internal Control Module: Memory Check Sum Error. P0601

This can only be resolved by reflashing the ECU. I rung them, they seemed "ok" to re-flash it. Arrived there and the chap didn't seem that interested but either way they fixed it for free. It's a 200 miles round trip so slightly annoying but never mind.

So back to the present, this error has flagged up again! I emailed them again, and received no reply. Rung them, he said he would look into it as he doesn't think they can do it for free anymore and it happens to all 1.8Ts so it's not an APR issue. I read back when I was investigating this was caused by a rogue programmer who was leaving the company, but I can't back this up.

It's been two weeks since I called and I haven't had a call. Rung them again this morning (took about 3 minutes to answer) and they apparently haven't heard anything back from APR... but he'll take my name and number just incase and chase it up. Which to me means he hasn't even bothered.

Anyway, what is your opinion? The only way to resolve it and clear the code/light is to re-flash with the APR map which cost me nearly £500 at the time. In my eyes it's a simple job and should be provided for free as I believe it's an issue with the map, and even if it isn't you can't expect people to pay to have it remapped if it's a common issue (I don't believe it is).

Can't say I've been impressed with the after sales support from Performance driven at all.
 
Ok, I've had some success.

Spoke to Andy at Awesome-GTI (APREU). What a nice chap, he explained the process and said they have sometimes seen it on other remaps (revo etc..) and standard cars.

I explained that PD told me they were charged per downloaded map, this is wrong- they are not.

I explained PD told me they needed to email APR in the US hence the delay, this is also wrong.

Andy said he will ring them this afternoon and see what they are up to and explain the process if they are unsure (and ring me back). I've heard good things about Awesome and this was a great level of service. If only they were local! :)

They said that they normally charge time to fix which is normally about £50. Can't say I'm that happy about paying for it, but it needs to be resolved. As long as the engine management light is on I won't be aware of any underlying issue (unless I vag-com often).

I'll let you guys know.

Go for it.

When searching I decided on the APR map as it seems highly regarded but being all the way down in the Southwest my options are limited.
 
He did mention something about cost in regards to how long the map had been on, but I've had it on for probably 4 years now so didn't dig too deep.

I do begrudge paying an hours labour for what is probably 5-10 minutes of actual work if I'm honest, although I suppose you could argue they've lost a space in their workshop.
 
hmmm seems Performance Driven at Taunton have a lot to answer for.

Personally i would want this issue resolved for free considering the circumstances.

I'm not sure why they've handled it like they have.

If they handled it as Andy did, the issue would have been resolved about 4 weeks ago :p
 
Andy from Awesome left me a message saying he had spoken to Performance driven and cleared up any confusion on the process and that I should hopefully get a call from them today. (This was about 2pm).

Nothing yet from PD though.
