hi guys, i have 2 paritions on my hard drive.

when i reinstall windows it thinks my second parition (The one i never want to format with all my games/music on) is C: and my smallest parition the one with windows/expenadble junk is my d:.

But when i load windows its the correct way around. c: small. with windows, d full of games.

how can I Install windows on my small paition and have it as C: instead of D: like it wants?

Merge both partitions using Partition Magic or Acronic Disk Director etc. Install Windows. Then use your partition tool from before to split the disk AFTER you've installed Windows. You can take most of the space from the C:\ drive and make the D:\ drive with it. You'd obviously want to leave a bit of space for temp files and the like, unless you plan to store these on D:\ as well.

Might want to add the standard "backup your data first" disclaimer to that Marc ;):p
Meh the risk of losing your data is half the fun.:p

And thanks for calling me by my first name. :)

indeed. they don't call it partition tragic for nothing.
I've never had trouble with Partition Magic losing me data.

oh well in that case, go for it. :D

nah i'm only kidding about pm, i don't use it but of course i've read a few tales of woe here and there. you could say the same about any piece of software. :)

Yeah I suppose there've been some stories about PM and they've just happened to be quite well known. I haven't actually used PM for just over two years now. I've got two hard disks on/in my PC and each is just one partitions, one disk (Raptor 74Gb) is my C:\ and the other (WD 250Gb) is my D:\.

However if I did need a partition tool I'd be tempted to use Acronis' Disk Director. I've heard nothing but good things about their TrueImage and I'm the kind of person to quite like to use other programs a company makes if I already use something else. So sometime I shall be getting TrueImage and possibly subsequently Disk Director as well.

My two disk setup also means that I can keep my valuable data on my D:\ drive and just format my C:\ without worry. The only thing I have on my C:\ drive that is of any use is anything in my My Documents folder. However I just really disagree with the My Documents idea and so I try to establish my own equivalent on D: but I don't want to move My Documents to D:\.

why not? that's exactly what i do. it's handy because every application defaults to saving there. :)
Its just an idealogical thing I have. Like the party I vote for, the football club I support and the women I drool over.:p

I've just never "liked" the My Documents idea. Perhaps because its on the C:\ and I'd have to back it up before formatting, whereas with keeping my documents on D:\ in my own organisational layout I can format C:\ without fear of the "Oh crap, I forgot to backup xx" realisation part way through the format.:D

eh? you've confused me now. that's the whole point of moving my documents to d: - so you don't have to worry about losing stuff on c. when i used to run xp, i had my documents set to the root of my d drive. and within that i used the my music and my pictures folders accordingly and arranged all my other junk by hand. the only things i've lost over the years is the odd game save which don't default to my documents and i've forgotten about them. :)

Sorry. What I mean is I don't like "My Documents", not keeping stuff in them. I just don't like it. I have my own organisational structure on D:\ drive. If I could I'd banish the "My Documents" philosophy to the annals of history. Bah humbug.

Yea, Iam with you on that one, when windows is installing it could do with an advanced options, where would you like my docs to go and ect.

no other way to do this?

on diskmgnt, It shows 2 primary partitions, c&d, should i delete d and remake it as an extended partition, is that the problem?

Any chance of a screenshot? It'd be easier to understand/see what you mean. And reduce the chances of bad advice being given.;)
