Hi,

Just building a new machine and I have bought the "Abit AT8 ATI RD480 Crossfire" m\b.

When turning on it sounds 1 long beep and then 3 small beeps and then auto turns off. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance. :)

That means no graphics card or bad graphics card RAM. Probably just needs to be removed and reseated. Try cleaning the 'gold fingers' connections on the card with a clean pencil eraser and try again.

Great I will try that, I did pull it out and "reseat" it but didn't work last night...will try and clean it in a moment... :)

Whats the error beeps for DDR RAM?

Thanks :)

Award beep codes are as follows,

1long, 2 short Video adapter error Either video adapter is bad or is not seated properly. Also, check to ensure the monitor cable is connected properly.
Repeating (endless loop) Memory error Check for improperly seated or missing memory.
1long, 3short No video card or bad video RAM Reseat or replace the video card.
High frequency beeeps while running Overheated CPU Check the CPU fan for proper operation. Check the case for proper air flow.
Repeating High/Low CPU Either the CPU is not seated properly or the CPU is damaged. May also be due to excess heat. Check the CPU fan or BIOS settings for proper fan speed.

Still not working...

Hi,

Luckily I have a PCI-E based computer upstairs so last night I did some tests as it still isn't working!

1) I tried another PCI-E card from my old working machine in my new machine but it still didn't work, with the same error beep (1 long 3 short).

2) I tried the 2GB of DDR4000 RAM (GEIL) from my new machine in my old machine and it worked fine, so the RAM is OK.

What do the LEDs mean? There is 1 red LED near the PCI-E card - is this right or should it be green? (i only have 1 graphics card)

Any other help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Have you tried clearing the CMOS? If not unplug the mains lead then put the CMOS jumper to the clear position for 30 seconds then put back in the normal position and try again.
Have you got the Shadow card in the slot nearest to the heatsink?
have you got all power connectors on the motherboard connected to the PSU ?
Have you got the CPU fan connected to the correct header on the board, some boards will shut down if they can't get an RPM signal from the CPU fan or if the speed of the fan is too slow. if in doubt of the fan being faulty plug a known fast fan into the CPU fan header.

>>Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

Yes, but not for 30secs - I will try it for longer! To active the CMOS clear do I need to power up while the CMOS jumper is in the clear position?

>>Have you got the Shadow card in the slot nearest to the heatsink?

Yes and the PCI-E in the one the furtherest slot.

>>Have you got the CPU fan connected to the correct header on the board,

Yes - the power plug is called CPUFAN1 and it looks in the correct place on the board.

Please check this thread as I feel I may have found an "issue":

Also remove the Cmos battery (coin cell 2032) DO NOT connect the mains lead to the machine with the jumper set to clear. It would damage the motherboard.
The CPU core voltage is set by the BIOS on modern boards.

Ok tried removing batt and putting to clear position for 1minute, still "check cpu volt" arghh!

Does this point to a dodgy CPU?

Well, I'd say the next step is to carefully remove heatsink, then remove the CPU and reseat it again then run the machine. Might just be a bad CPU connection. Be careful that you dont pull the CPU out with the heatsink and bend or break pins off it.

Just tried that, still getting the same error code. :( What would you do next?

PS: Thanks for your help so far. :)

Yep tried it both ways round (ram in old machine in new and vice versa) same with graphics card... :( Bugger.

Its a pain as I don't have loads of spare bits to swap and try...might just take to a shop so they can hot swap all items to find if any aren't working!
