I have used a company called TempCover in the past to insure a car for 24 hours. I paid £11.93 for fully comprehensive insurance for a Toyota Corolla (55 reg). They only offer cover for 28 days max, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't take out another policy for a further 28 days if you need it.
Depending on the car it may work out cheaper to use a standard insurer (or broker like A-Plan or Chris Knott), insure the car for 12 months and then get a pro-rata refund for the months you don't use?
Last time I tried to get temp cover it was going to cost around £160 for 28 days on a Pug 206. It worked out cheaper to take out a proper policy then cancel it.
