What are most fuel efficient standard cars. By that I mean mass producted model. I do an unavoidable commute though a heavy city traffic and I was wondering whats the most fuel efficient car to do this. Usually we use a Micra which gives us about 27mpg on that run. Our 2L Primera GT gives us about 24mpg on the same route. Average speed on route is about 20mph. Probably what really hurts this is you need to give it a bit of welly to merge into traffic. So bursts of acceleration, lots of braking and then stitting idling for long periods. Really slow cars aren't suitable for this kinda driving. You get away with it the micra because its got a really lively 16v 1.0L. Other heavier cars slower cars are just a pain for this kinda driving.

We generally avoid it by going very early and you miss the traffic, and I'll probably cycle once the weather gets better. But I got to wondering what cars are really fuel efficient in urban routes, and also which cars have the longest range. Basically the biggest fuel tank. Again in the urban route.

i think the Citoren C2 1.4HDI is the mose fuel efficent car for sale in the uk, although i think those electric hybrid cars excel in urban driving they are just crap over about 45mph

a stock daihatsu charade 1 litre diesel turbo set a round the uk fuel economy record years ago, only beaten by that special vw lupo thing

"1991 Round Britain Record, Daihatsu Charade, 103.01 mpg, 3,621 miles" was in the guiness book of records.

The new Fiat Panda 1.3T Multijet Diesel I thought was the best. Does about 65-70 real mpg. Also comes in a more funky looking sporting guise now but with the same engine but heard is still quite nippy, especially when chipped to about 90bhp.

The venerable Citroen AX 1.4 Diseasal was in the Guiness Book of Records for a while for acheiving over 112mpg, but that was on a motorway, not in heavy traffic.

According to http://www.ukcar.com/guinness/ (note, their typos included!)

"The Greatest ever travelled by a vehicle on the contents of a standard fuel tank ( 17 1/2 GALLONS ) is 1,338 miles by an Audi 100 TDi The car was driven between John O'Groats to Lands End and back again between 26th and 28th July 1992."

Of cars presently available, I'd expect the new Aygo to be good (if it's available as a diesel) and also the Lupo, both of which are very light.

I recently calculated that the vehicle with the greatest tank range, currently on sale in Britain, is the Peugeot 607 2.0 HDI 136 PS. Taking the extra urban figure (56.4mpg), and its tank capacity of 17.6 gallons, in theory it should do 992.6 miles to a tank.

Fox - *chortle* "Lively 1.0L?! Nothing compared to a straight six or V8! Poverty spec!"

The 206 has a 80 Litre tank? Find that hard to believe. If true, thats pretty crazy, 80 litres is Luxobarge teritory.

If you are only doing short journeys get a diesel. A Petrol will come close to a Diesel on Long journeys, but no where near on short journeys.

No he said 607 not 206. ;)

Quick question sparky --->

Are you going to buy a new car simply for fuel efficiency or did you already have plans to buy a new car and just want a fuel efficient one?

If its the former then its kinda pointless over your current motor since you will never recoup the costs of a replacement car by the fuel savings alone.

Nothing compared to a V10 or V12 ;) What are you poor or something? :p

I can only imagine a V12 would give MPG in the single figures.

Obviouly its lively compared to other small engined yokes. Every drive a 1L Polo or Ibiza. Woeful.
