1 or 2 spaces after a full stop?

I was taught 2 spaces as standard at college on an ICT course so thats the way I do it.

I also think it's one sandwich if you cut it in half but we won't go into that again :p

Exactly right on both points.

I still didn't understand the people who said it's 2 sandwiches.

It's 2 halves or a round of sandwiches, but def not 2.

Wierdo's lol

:o

Just when you thought Wikipedia couldn't possibly have every bit of information....:p

The fact that 2 spaces after a stop is 'French spacing' is enough to convince me that 1 space for both commas and stops is in fact the correct method.

Lol good enough for me ;)

Infact wikipedia says 'convention' which seems to suggest someone somewhere made it up and others copied saying it was right when infact it makes no difference.

If you need two spaces after every sentence to claify what you have written then either your document does not read very well or you cannot use paragraphs correctly.

... it makes is easier to tell a comma and full stop apart if you're reading quickly.
The capital letter after the full stop is a bit of a giveaway though, isn't it? ;)

Treefrog, i'm not one of those clowns that type everything in perfect English and correct people's typos etc. I should have expected a reponse like that from a forum like this.
Meaning that those of us who can and do use the language properly are clowns?

Using proper English online generally looks rude too.
Disagree. Not using it shows a lack of consideration for those people to whom your comment was addressed. And then, when people cba to translate it into something readable, your point never gets noticed.

If you cut a space in half is it still one space or two spaces?
Two spaces :) Space isn't defined by size or quantity :p

its a half space
If it takes one man 5 days to dig a hole how long would it take 5 men to dig half a hole?

Dude, if they need extra help in their reading it can't be helped :(

You shouldn't mock the afflicted ;)

Unless the second hole's half the size of the first hole, therefore should be half as difficult to dig... (Gilly could you have derailled this thread any more?! :p).
You could've stopped when I made you look silly :)

There is no such thing as half a hole. This cannot be argued. You may have 2 holes, one of which is half the size of the other, but it is not half a hole. It is, in fact, a whole hole.

The correct answer is simple.

Two spaces after a full stop, one after a comma. I think the forum software doesn't like multiple spaces though and incorrectly truncates two spaces to be just one.

Which is wrong.

Actually I just remembered. Reading the 'typesetter' bit.. I was a typesetter/mac operator and as far as I know we all used the single space. I was taught two spaces at school but promptly didn't ever do it.

And yes no such thing as half a hole, why do people think there could be.
