1 or 2 spaces after a full stop?

2 spaces after a full stop and one space after a comma is the way ive always been taught my grammar.

The correct answer is simple.

Two spaces after a full stop, one after a comma. I think the forum software doesn't like multiple spaces though and incorrectly truncates two spaces to be just one.

Which is wrong.

K.

I suppose over 10 years of MS Word no one has ever told them?

Personally for me it has always been 1, have seen people use 2 but it looks wrong. Why is there a need for double to illustrate it is a new sentence? surely a full stop is the sign for that.

Two spaces for commas and two for fullstops.

;)
two spaces = another tree chopped down! - Not only is it wrong out of common sense but also environmentally wrong.

Breakfast 6-9am
Elevensies 11am - 11.15am
Lunch 12 -2
Tea - 4-5pm Normally consists of cucumber sandwiches
Dinner 6-8pm
Supper 10-11pm
Midnight Snack. 12pm.

Anyone who believes any different is either
a) Northern
or
b) French
or
c) Both

and also completely...
d) Wrong

I was taught one space, when I was younger I typed using two spaces after a dot, but I use one space after dot at the moment.

Oh and to settle this, when you do a double space on the forum it gets taken out when you post it... so one is best :p

And anyone who thinks a Midnight Snack is at 12pm. is either

a) Southern
b) Needs to go back to school to learn how to tell the time
c) Both.

and also completely...
d) Rubbish at making a midnight snack

Can we turn off whatever auto-corrects two spaces to one please. Then
a)it would be obvious who's using two spaces
b)the mods could have fun banning anyone that uses two spaces.

The articles posted explain this away nicely. Properly spaced fonts and whatnot have pretty much done away with the need for the double space. It's just a relic of when we used typewriters.

Like Mohinder, I am a trained typesetter - apprenticeship, the whole bit - the correct spacing after any punctuation is one space. Using double spaces is a throwback to the use of typewriters when you were stuck with one font and that font had monospaced characters.

Using two spaces after punctuation is unneccessary with modern kerned fonts. This debate often crops up at home as my wife is PA to an MD - at secretarial college she was taught to use two and continues to do so to this day - with the training I had, it bugs the arse off me ...

I've always been a two space practitioner. But now I've found out it is referred to as French spacing, I'm a new one space convert!

well when ever I do 2 spaces after a fullstop in MS Word it always gives you the green line error ;)
Ive always ever done 1, never herd of anybody done 2 before :o

Well spotted - just shows us Southerners aren't always perfect. ;)

hmmm i thought everyone used 2!

i was taught in RSA typing 2 spaces for a full stop.... that's all i have known since and all i have used, before RSA typing i used 1 and i don't think it's enough looking back and would never change from using 2 spaces.

we need a POLL!

Not really. All that will tell us is how many people do what, not which is right.

My answer would be .... it depends on context. If using a manual typewriter, two spaces. If using a computer, or submitting manuscripts, one space, unless submission rules specify otherwise.

so... they taught you to use 2 spaces after a period mark but not to use capitalise the letter 'i' when referring to yourself? :p

i dont see this as a major concern personally. it doesnt do any harm whether you use one or two spaces. its not as though we're talking about cutting a sandwhich in half to create two sandwiches...
