so my new rig arrived today

now i cant build it until the weekend as im moving into my new place.
but i was wondering if i could get a headstart by installing windows 8.1 onto the ssd from my laptop that runs windows 7.1? most of the guides that i can find say that u first have to install 8.1 on my laptop.
If i do this dont i lose the activation key? or am i looking at this the wrong way? any help would be appreciated.
