Got One red light + E74 code, gonna do it myself and do the GPU X clamp Mod, looks easy enough. cant be arsed to send it back now, because i already stripped it down not knowing about the extended warranty lol.....
anybody else done the same?

I've seen two consoles with that same problem in the past few weeks. I doubt that would fix the issue and if it did it wouldn't last long. When it craps out like that the damage is already done. All the mods like the x-clamp replacement, shroud mods etc should be done when it's fully working to prevent stuff like that happening in the first place. Although none of it would be necessary if Microsoft designed it properly to begin with.

Oh well i'll just have to try it, as i have already stripped it down, i wish i knew about the extended warranty :(

Ps: also the warranty only covers 3-4 RROD Dosn't it?

Very easy to fix yourself, and a will be virtually certain to never happen again if you do both the GPU and the CPU... something that even a warranty repair from Microsoft doesn't gaurantee.

Go for it. My console had E74 error then RROD. Stripped it down, cleaned the heatsinks + chips, in the oven for 3 mins, re-apply thermal goop, x-clamp fix, reassemble and voila! No more RROD or E74, had a duffed DVD drive instead :D I do think that was my fault as I had thrown the xbox many times while it was broken for the "lulz"

Just got to get the bits to sort it out and will start so i will report back once i've done this, i was thinking that there would be loads of us doing this mod.

Ok well X clamp mod i have completed to both GPU & CPU with the use of artic silver 5, not suprised it runs hot seeing the goop that is used between the two heatsinks was all over the place, I followed the Utube vid in my last post. worked well and the 360 is up and running again.

so would it be wise to do the xclamp mod even though my xbox is fully working at the mo to prevent it from happening?

TBH matey i'd leave it, if you get a single Red light then do it. another thing is to make sure its not in a confined space.

It would be easier to get the mod kit online rather than messing about yourself if you did ever need to do it

Dons:
Would this be worth adding this to the 360 FAQ? if the info in this post has not already added by a similar post?

yea its in a nice spot on my desk so its open to air, my last one e74'ed so just wondered if it would stop it from happening if i sorted the problem before it started. Will leave it for now then.

thanks for the advice

For the sake of a fiver with only 12 months of extended left i may consider one of the kits if it rrods again - i've been through two already!

I replaced the X-Clamps on one of mine which didn't do the trick. I even let it heat up with no fans to try and reflow the solder.

Would I need to use a heatgun or the oven?
