I've tried Google for this but I'm unable to get a definitive answer.
I currently have a BT phone line along with BT broadband.
I am using the Netgear DG834 router to serve access on one floor of my house and am now getting another PC for a different floor. Is it possible to use a standard modem for this PC at the same time the router is on?

Plug both PC's into your DG834 and your good to go. If you don't fancy running CAT5 cable from upstairs to your downstairs router then consider either a DG834G or a cheap wireless access point and a wireless PCI card or USB adaptor in the PC upstairs (PCI Card would be better), you could that for less than £50.

If you put a USB ADSL modem on the PC upstairs you wouldn't be able to have both machines online at the same time.

Thanks for that. I dont fancy having cables everywhere and it needs to serve a 3 storey house so I am a bit cautious about going wireless unless I really need to

Have a look at the Powerline adapters.

I did but the expense can mount up if you need 3 or more...
I'm taking your advice from my other thread and going for the DG834PN with a free WPN111 for £75.
I can't really find better than that for the money

EDIT: Just found out this may interfere with my PS3 so I may need to re-think

No it is not possible to use to ADSL modems at the same time on the one line

3 floors for wireless shouldn't be a problem, as long as they're not concrete, its 3ft thick stone walls I've found it to struggle with.

There should be no problems with your PS3 and DG834PN...

Am myself is using a DG834PN with two PC's and an xbox360 connected by wireless with no problems..

Doing a random google for "uk homeplug" gives a site selling pairs of homeplug adapaters for £60ish inc shipping (solwise brand). Bought a pair myself, plugged them in, stuck the cat 5 into either end and viola - instant network.
You can go through messing with encryption etc but if no-ones sharing your power you have nothing to worry about.
You can also go powerline - wireless access point without too much trouble.
