Hi,

My Dad is interested in getting a BMW 1 Series F20 116ED but I can't help but think that it's the wrong choice.

It would do about 7000 miles a year and would mostly be driven on short journeys around town with occasional 200-300 mile journeys probably once a month.

Is it worth convincing him when all he sees is £0 VED and 72mpg.

If so what would be your suggestion(bearing in mind he is 60 and not interested in a m-sport)?

Thanks.

I'd suggest getting the petrol alternative as I don't think 7k miles per year requires a diesel, especially if your dad is starting and stopping in town a lot.

This is absolutely the wrong car for his usage. He would be far better off with the 116i or 118i.

He will not get 72mpg around town doing short journeys anyway.

The ED is specifically designed to appeal to company car drivers by fitting into certain emissions brackets.

This is what I thought, what would he expect to get from the 116ED compared to the petrol?

Fox is right.

I'm in a potion to comment on both because I have a petrol 118i and my work colleague has a 116Ed, both bought at the same time.
He easily manages 70+ MPG and i'm currently on 45 MPG, having both covered nearly 3,000 miles now.

Like you pointed out - the ED is super cheap to get on a car scheme but I would pay the little extra to get the 116i SE.
