10/100 mbit network/internet question

i have 8mb broadband, running over cat 5 cable from my hub to my pc.

i have used 2 pairs to connect the network ends at each end of the network cable (running phone line on the other 2 pair)

the network connects on my PC showing as 10mbps

i have just upgraded to 16mb broadband which i will get next week.

Do i need to get my network running at 100mbps to use the extra bandwith ?
do i need to use more wires in my network cable to achieve this ?

10Mbps < 16Mbps, so it would be a bottleneck.
You shouldn't need four pairs to do 100Mbps though - it's GigE that uses all four. Have you checked your wiring is all fine with no broken pairs?

Are you using the 'proper' two pairs for the ethernet? I've seen odd things happen when they're not and I've also had very unhappy experiences with ethernet splitters than run two connections over one cable.

You could try forcing the port on the PC to 100Mb as auto-negotiation doesn't always work.

I did that and it seems to have come straight up at 100mbps......

excellent.... now just got to wait for my adsl2+ router to arrive.....

I would suggest doing some bandwidth tests across that to make sure it can actually reliably run at 100mbit speeds ...
