So this is weird...

I have been running my new OC settings on my i5 for a few weeks. They aren't 100% stable, but temp wise in prime 95 everything is south of 75 core temp.

The chip on idle was sitting at 37*c and during normal activity rises to 42*c.

Now it is sitting at 50, rising to 60 in normal light work.

Cooling wise, I have a good provision:

Titan Fenrir, polished the base, ShinEtsu G751 paste

18cm fan on the side.

12cm intake fan where the extra drive bays are - took them out, 12 cm exhaust fan, with the perforated metal cut away. The air flow is great, the fans are 78CFM.

I just can't explain this! It seemed to happen after it had a wee crash, actually the first one I had seen yet, it was a memory dump one - blue screen.

I have been through my previous settings, loaded an older OC profile and it too is running much hotter than expected! Have I wrecked my chip?

I was/am running this at 4.3GHz, and I had the VCore pretty lean to keep the heat down.

I would really appreciate some help!

Has the vcore gone up?
Has the machine been moved? (Is it possible that the heatsink has been knocked causing problems with the TIM?)

It is in the same position.

Vcore is the same.

=(

I doubt that the heatsink was knocked, but if this persists, I will take it off, clean it and re-apply the thermal paste.

might seem like a daft question, but "polished the base", i take it that means you lapped it, not actually polished it ?

what voltage have you run through the processor ?

any chance the ambient temp has increased, been a bit colder of late has the central heating been turned on ?

Yes, I meant lapped and polished :) I spent a couple of hours on that!

My Vcore is 1.3875 on the board, and CPUID picks that up as 1.376V

Yes, heating was on last night, which instantly was my thought, so I opened my window and got my room back to where I like it... on the colder side of things. It didn't help the temps at all! :S If it did, I didn't notice it!

Mike

heating the room will increase the delta t in your room. Measure your room temp and then minus that by the cpu temp. Thats your delta t. Next day do that with the heating off. And the delta t should stay the same even tho the cpu temp is lower

Out of interest what is your OS? Different OS do different things to CPU's when you get a BSOD. For example XP pro kicks all cores to 100% during the BSOD dump.

But it sounds more like a cooler has shifted slightly - that would certainly explain what has happened. And 5 degrees would be about right for a slight change in contact.

Will cost you nothing but time to remount your cooler.

You know, I was in my case before it happened, and I do remember nudging the cooler... I thought nothing of it. I will take it off, clean and re-do it.

I run 7 on this machine.

Yeah, I understand the latent heat issues; I left my window open all morning and the room was actually cold. The temps were no-where near the 37/38*c I was used to at idle. More like 48.

Just sharing what I think is a pretty killing track:

I have been listening to that album all morning.... /tangent over/
