Hi guys,
Was looking at a mates laptop last night and it was taking well over 10 minutes (probably closer to 15!) to boot from cold
Its a fairly high spec machine; 4gb, core2duo and it hasn't been like this for long by all accounts, he reckons its only been declining over the past month or so. I went through the usual, tried turning off unnecessary startup items and services and although this seemed to improve things for the first couple of boots, it eventually began to take as long as it did to start with! The main thing I've noticed with the laptop is the hard drive (status led and 'noise') seems to be very laboured? Its as if its start/stopping all the time - working in bursts. I've tested the drive on a couple of utilities (chkdsk, hdtune) and it comes up clear. I also defragged the drive but it wasn't particularly to start with tbh.
I've also thoroughly scanned for viruses and spyware and there's nothing.
I think the next step will be to reinstall windows but before I do has anyone got any other thoughts or suggestions? Feels like I might be missing something
Thanks.
