10 NUTRITION RULES FOR BEGINNERS

Rico, thats actually an interesting read, there are some alright articles on there. I did realise that my post came off a little aggressive. I wasn't trying to say that eating every 2 hours is a must I meant more that its a good thing to do and is also not hard, I find it easier to control what I eat if I eat that frequently.

I do also think its important to eat breakfast because otherwise you might end up not eating for half of a day and that seems like a waste more than anything. I remember when I did my first powerlifting comp about a month ago I was a little over weight so was trying to cut a few kilos. In the end I did this by water manipulation but i also started controlling my diet a lot more because before then I was on the "see food diet" and basically ate what I felt like. I got a lot of advice from my club members and they said (excluding the one who doesn't eat breakfast) that skipping any of my meals was a bad idea because you want your food to be spread over the day. I am aware of diets where you cluster your food intake, for instance the warriors diet where the majority of your calories are eaten at night. This was just the advice given to me so that is my understanding of it, I wasn't meaning to sound like I was saying it was true for everyone :)

Djdom56, did you see the points in the article about TEF:

For anyone that didn't see:

The total amount of energy expended by TEF would be identical in each scenario. Meal frequency does not affect total TEF. You cannot "trick" the body in to burning more or less calories by manipulating meal frequency.

Quite simple thinking really! I've another thread on the go about I.F for anyone else that might be interested.

I did find a lot of the stuff on there, like the actual myths, I had never heard of and if I'm honest didn't sound like something that makes sense (not that that sentence did :)). Without meaning to sound rude I'm quite surprised that some of them are real myths.

What do you mean by I.F? I haven't heard of that before. Could you put a link to the I.F thread please :)?

Rico,

Have you any experience of intermittent fasting? I'd be interested to hear how people have got on with it.

Not properly no. I'd find it hard to eat absolutely loads 3 times a day so have always eaten little and often (5-6 times) as I find I enjoy it more and suits my lifestyle. Thats what I was doing this summer when I was lean.

I.F is Intermittent Fasting - Basically your first meal is about lunch time so you wouldnt have eaten for some 16 hours. Read more about it here: http://avidityfitness.net/2008/01/12/interview-martin-berkhan/ and here: http://www.leangains.com/2010/04/leangains-guide.html

Interesting read, however I find myself a cynic when the source for these 'rules' come from what looks like anecdotal evidence of individuals be it website owners, bodybuilders etc...

I'd really like to see evidence backed up by clinical trials, cohort studies...there's just far too much information out there written by self-proclaimed experts in the field who rely on their personal experience.

And actually, your body isn't some bawling child that says "I want water, now! I want food, now, you must give it to me!" it's actually a wise old man which says "Oh, there's not much water going round, better slow things down a bit. No food? Okay, I'll just drop a gear and carry on".
