Soon its going to be 10 years since the first ipod launched.
what i would like to know is will the classic be killed off or will it get one last update?

It seems to be a tough one right now for many reasons

I personaly would love if it they did something special with it being the 10th year so a higher resolution screen, new GUI, better SQ, bigger and faster HDD, better battery life?

The main reason i want it to stay is like most people who own it would say the capacity! i like not having to decide what i want to listen to from my itunes library with limited space on the device like i used to a few years back with the ipod nano. its just pick up and go.

I can also see why they wouldnt keep it, it hasnt really been updated since 2007, all the current ones seem to be heading in the touch screen direction so it can have apps and its big and bulky with a click wheel.

so what do you think is going to happen this year at apple's music event?

Its a great device, when I went traveling its awesome battery life helped fill in the 36 hour train jounerys etc etc.

Would be a great shame if they did get rid of it ,fingers crossed they dont

They have been updating the Classic's internals over the years (changing the DACs they use for example) but a major upgrade is definitely needed. Although once Apple start using 128GB flash drives in the Touch the Classic's niche would be gone. They could place it to appeal to the high end market like they do with the Mac Pro but Apple has never cared about the audiophile market.

I replaced my iPod Touch with an iPod Classic simply due to the capacity limit of the Touch. As soon as theres a Touch that's big enough to hold my entire library I'll switch back.

They could bundle it with decent sound quality! My Sony 8gb stomps all over the ipod for terms of sound quality, and even the screen is larger. However, my 160Gb classic can get far far more videos on it. Sony 8Gb for music, iPod 160gb for videos.

I love the sq of the Sony players so I agree with you there. I think the iPod classic 5th gen used dual Wolfson dacs and was the best sounding player so not sure why they stopped that and wanted to go downhill from there, a better internal amp would good too! Dunno if Sony players are the ones with the good amps? But yeah they could try to do something like that.

For a portable device the 6.35mm jack would be a no-no. Its just not standard anymore. Its easier to convert the other way, and thats only for the awkward ones of you out there :p.

Loved watching that vid, cheers.

Quite amazing that 10 years later, the ipod has changed very little. I was thinking the other day what I would do if my ipod classic died, and there are just no other hard drve base alternatives on the market anymore.

Got nothing on Cowon though.

oh really?

you do realise that the majority of people listen to music on a portable mp3 player on headphones which cost less than £30. therefore it doesn't matter about the sound quality of the device.

also an ipod using line out, instead of the headphone out, coupled with a decent portable amp such as the fiio e6 or e11 will sound amazing and offer so much more than any cowon device does.

the equ app for the touch is amazing and offers a lot of customization which you cannot get from a cowon.

the cowon as an mp3 player is only superior in 1 department, sound quality. the ipod beats it for everything else. then factor in the line out and amp option with equ app, then the touch offers extremely high sound quality.

the only cowon which can compete is the new D3 which is £279 for the 32GB model, making it overpriced.

sure they are great devices but looking at the bigger picture they have nothing on the ipod touch.

Ahh I remember my first iPod. Unfortunately I was a little late to the party, it was a 4th Gen one, IIRC the last with a monochrome screen.

I don't think I've ever owned a different type of MP3 player. The one before that was a MiniDisc player that stored music files in ATRAC format on the discs themselves.
