Hi guys,

Looking for a cheap GPU to dip my toe into gaming. Plus my upcoming Ryzen build may well require one.

I'm in no particular hurry here, as the build won't be until March anyway, but I could potentially stick it in my 4770k rig anyway (16gb 1600 MHz).

I have zero intention of going for a 4K monitor anyway, so only needs to run 1080p. Would like halfway reasonable performance here though.

I've never been into PC gaming, so know almost nothing about graphics cards anyway.

So what would you guys recommend for my budget?

I have seen some R9 270 cards go for around the £100 mark lately. Also gtx 960 should be around that mark these days.

I suppose it'll maybe be worth adding in PSU specs? As I have already purchased them.

I currently use the Corsair RM650 in my 4470k build, and have just bought a Super Flower Platinum King 450W 80 Plus Platinum for the new build. Now I could use whatever is the best PSU for whatever build, but if possible, I would like a card compatible with either PSU.

Also, as my gaming is likely to be infrequent, I would prefer a GPU with little power draw when just watching movies on VLC or general more "idle" workloads.

So what's better here? Nvidia or AMD?

Is there any kind of secondhand market section here or does that conflict with the OCUK business too much?

Yes, there is the Members Market here. So I am keeping an eye out on there. But knowing little about GPU's, I don't really know what's better, R9 this or GTX that...

Thanks. Will keep an eye out for these then. I was looking at some reviews of the RX480, but didn't want to add an extra £100 to the budget.

You can get a 280x for £100-125 unless you get lucking below 100, GTx 970 can be had as low as £120 depending how urgent the seller is, a 270x can be had from £70 in a used shop or online. Can get 760/950/960 from 80-130 depending where you go.

Or you could just buy a 4gb Rx 460 off here brand new for £120

See I would have thought the higher number would be better. So would the 970 not be better than the 780ti?

I just don't know how to tell.

It is, but only a tad bit. On the other hand, you can get the 780 ti now, while the 970 you don't know when/if it will appear, and whether it will go for just £125. I would say though, the £75 extra you spend on the AMD RX480 would give you quite a bit for the money and you wouldn't be already behind in terms of technology.

Thank so guys.

I'm in no real hurry just now anyway, so I will monitor MM on here over the next few weeks and see what crops up. I do like the look of the RX 480, but coming from console gaming, it costs more than my last couple of Xbox ones alone, lol.
