I have recently been encountering this very strange issue with Vista Ultimate x64. Whenever I open My Computer, or 'Computer' as it is now called, the CPU usage will rocket to 100%. The offending process is explorer.exe, but what could be causing this? I have no spyware/viruses, and this has only started occurring recently. I am trying to backtrack and think what I might have installed that may have triggered this and nothing seems to spring to mind.

One thing to note is that this will ONLY happen when 'Computer' is opened directly...from the start menu or desktop. If I open it from within explorer or am backtracking through history in explorer there is no problem. Also, when the window is minimised, the issue will cease.

I have tried leaving the window open to see if the activity subsides, but it simply remains at 100% indefinately. I know this kind of thing can be caused by rogue MS updates, but I have isntalled a few.

What's likely to be causing this?

EDIT: Just one more thing, this only happens on this particular account. On other accounts on the same PC, there is no issue.

Well that's typical. I spend hours trying to solve the issue, and as soon as I post the problem on a forum, I fix it myself! :p

For anyone who's wondering, the culprit was a shortcut which had placed itself in my 'Computer' folder named 'My Web Sites on MSN'. The target for this shortcut had been deleted which seemed to be what was causing the problem. Deleting the shortcut solved the issue.
