I've just tried to play some HD films on a pc. The files are 720p HD/BluRay MKV files.

The spec is

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0Ghz)
1gb RAM
NVidia GeForce 8800GTS 640mb

As soon as the video starts playing in windows media player the cpu useage shoots up and at times the video will be jerky.

I would have thought the spec should be sufficient but maybe I'm wrong?
Or is something else causing the problem?

Thanks

What program are you playing them in and what OS? I think you're cutting it close with the processor and possibly the ram.

Windows 2003 server with media player 11. I've also tried using VLC and that's worse. I've got the vista codecs installed.

It's not using much ram when playing a video..

The 640 GTS does not have the HD acceleration features included in the later nv cards (8600, 8800 GT, GTS 512 etc).

One of my HTPC has a 8600 GTS and a x2 6000. When playing back HD-DVD/BR CPU load is normally 10-20% with the frequency at 1ghz (C&Q full on)

Well ram shouldn't be a prob in server 2003, imo I think the processor isn't fast enough, I built a similar system for my brother in law a while back (vista 64) and iirc 720p was a bit iffy.

The only advice I can give is to try giving it higher priority and/or to change the rendering technique in VLC.

Well my media centre is an Athlon 2500+ with an AGP- ATI 9200(128MB? and veeerrryy old -not a modern monster) in it, and it copes admirably with 720p (about 60-80%) 1080 is another matter
I have CoreCodec installed - which makes a goodly difference if that is any help

Thanks for all the replies. I'll give some of those codecs/video players a try before anything else.

Does this mean my card won't play HD or does it just mean the system will struggle more to play HD videos?

I could never get 720p to play very well on my old 2500 even when overclocked, corecodec sounds like a good idea.

Do I install CoreAVC and use media player to play the files? or is there another player I should be using?

Ive got exactly the same spec machine as youself.
Im playing 720p MKV files fine at about 50% - 70% CPU usage.

Im using CoreAVC and VLC player - these are perfect for lower spec machines and cope with 720p fine.
