100% CPU usage

I'm using an AMD Athlon 300+ skt 754 64bit CPU at 2.4GHz, 1.25GB RAM and a GeForce 6200 128MB graphics card.

When I run videos (or try to) my CPU maxes out to 100% and the videos won't run, MediaPlayer, JetAudio and all other players just say 'connecting'. The task manager says that it's not the video player maxing out, and it normaly says it's explorer (sometimes it doesn't say anything is, even though it is maxing out).

I have re-installed windows (running Windows XP Home) twice now. Videos were working but I re-installed the PC for other reasons, then I started to get this video problem, so re-installed windows, and I am still getting it.

I've had someone tell me that he had this problem, and it was due to windows not loading the videos correctly into the RAM...and he fixed it by re-installing.

This is really trying my patience as I do video editing and need to be able to play videos.

If anybody has any idea as to what is wrong and how I can fix it (ideally without yet another re-install) that'd be great.

Cheers.

on another note you can get this when certain codecs are installed that are not functioning properly...just keeps on chewing up more and more memory and using more and more cpu

had this problem on my laptop when um......watching exotic....male/female sports ;-)

but fixed it again by getting rid of all the codecs.and reinstalling or finding another codec pack

Thing is I've uninstalled all codecs from Add/Remove Programs, but I still can't play any videos. The RAM usage doesn't seem to budge (but then Task Manager doesn't give very good RAM usage details), the Virtual Memory certainly doesn't get used.

I'm thinking it could be what JAKUS said about hardware acceleration as when playing games I am also getting a very low FPS, BF2 used to get like 30-70fps, now it's getting 15-30 (15 being the min displayable due to locks in the coding of the game).

I suppose I should install the latest Nvidia's own drivers (thought I was, but realised jus now that it lists my overclock settings...only does that with modified drivers). Nvidia's own drivers should then force the graphics card to proper settings instead of running it as effective onboard graphics.

OR, the latest Nvidia drivers are messing around with my computer...

Hardware Video options are often in the Player's settings aswell as the Video card and windows...Google if Your not sure

tip, Find mplayer2 in windows. its the classic media player from file/properties/advanced You can see what codecs are being used to play a file.

Your Talking now about poor game performance, sounds like all Your problems are Video related, find Driver cleaner and clear out all old drivers and redo Your motherboard drivers and GFX card drivers

AH HAH...I'm so slow it's unbelivable...was the graphics drivers I had installed, I had the 91.31 drivers from Nvidia which don't fully work with my graphics card (well it seems that way), I went to a 3rd party site that I know that hosts many, many graphics drivers and got the 84.56 ones, which support my graphics card. :D

Cheers all for your help. :)
