My sons computer over the past 4 days has been showing svchost proccess at 100% in windows task manager. I have read loads of posts on here about svchost but none have covered my situation. I have tried ProcessExplorer and this shows the file as being ibm00001.dll which is located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders. Can anyone help me resolve this problem?

Hi ajm. I just did a quick google, http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=ibm00001.dll&btnG=Google+Search&meta= and the third link is a bit worrying, "Trojan.IBM/Shell.Process is a trojan that installs under the Microsoft Shared folder in Common Files under Program Files".

Have you run an antivirus scan? Or a spyware scan? Might be best to do this in safe mode if you can seeing as the dll file is causing Windows to use 100% of the processor.

Tip: like the guy above me ALWAYS Google unknown files and processes, it will generally lead you to the money.

Disable system restore, empty your temporary files, and then run a full virus-scan using something decent like the online Kaspersky scanner. Afterwards, post a Hijackthis log and we can see if there's anything you need to remove.

@MarcLister

Thanks for that info. I have a problem with my antivirus as it wasn't working properly after the file was found so i uninstalled it and tried to install it agin but it wouldn't now i have no anti virus to check it with.

@Richdog

I do always google the files before posting but came to no success. I have already Disabled system restore, emptied temporary files. I would use an online virus scanner but would not be able to do this in safe mode as i don't know how and in normal mode my cpu would be at 100% making it take forever.

Any other suggestions or ways around this are much appreciated.

Hijackthis log as I stated in my post? If it takes ages with the 100% cpu chugging away then well... tough really... we need the info to help you diagnose this.

Also there's nothing stopping you doing an online virus scan, if that takes ages due to the CPU then it's also tough tbh, just wait for it to finish.

Thanks for all your help guys. I couldn't get online in safe mode as my pc wouldn't let me use the network. I couldn't delete the file in safe mode as it said it was being used. I decided just to back up needed files and done a fresh install, now everything is fine.Thanks again.:)

Next time you need to use the internet in safe mode, press F8 on boot and select Safe Mode with Networking, you should be able to get online.... ;)

Thanks for the tip, but i did try that and it still wouldn't let me. I think it may be because my connection is wireless and the drivers may not be there in safe mode. Or am i wrong?
