the other night i transfered 70gigs of divx movies from my external hdd (iceybox) onto my e drive. whilst doing so explorer restarted a few times and i thought nothing of it and i continued to start the transfer again.

the other night i noticed my system become very sluggish and my temps where through the roof.

brought up task manager and both my cores where under full load. closed all windows like ie7 and messenger etc and still both cores where under full load with temps of 54c. didnt notice anything other strange programs running.

restarted and about ten minutes later the same thing happened but it was only core 2.

i have done a full system virus scan using avg and searched for spyware/adware but nothing was found.

any ideas to what may cause this, i dont mind if i have to do a format (which always solves the problem)

do you think it may be the overclock. its been overclocked from around november and gave no problems since.

havnt tried safemode im in work now. im still thinking virus, a few on here dont reccomend avg as it doesnt detect virus's now and again and prefere avast but personally i hate it.

It maybe down to an overclock but as you said it's been overclocked since November so there shouldn't be any issue there. When you get home i would recommend you restart your pc [Hold F8 Before Boot Screen] and see if it continues at 100% in safe mode, if not then it could be software related.

It's funny how you mention moving DivX movies from an external storage device and then the problem occurs as mine done exactly the same as yours did.

I solved my issue with the usual format routine.

I think its time for the format anyway, might just go ahead and do it.

Before i format ill unplug my e drive and see if the problem persists, but if it is virus related then it might have spread onto my c and d drives, hope not though.

I'm sure I've read about an issue with IE7 that causes CPUs to run at 100% load. Try Googling for it.

ive been running ie7 from the day it was built with no problems. even when ie7 isnt running it just jumps to 100% on one or on both cores. soemtimes it sits at 50% on C1 or C2

Just done a Google myself and it seems that many things can cause it. If you have the time and patience then there are ways of tracking it down but I'm lazy so I would go ahead with the format.

It might be an idea to create a few restore points between installing your apps though, just in case it comes back.

i have been makign restore points but there has been so many issues ive lost track and a format would be the best solution for me, like yourself i have no patience and lazy lol

If you open task manager and look down the list of processes can't you see what is maxing out? Another thing, could it possibly be the disk indexer? as you have moved such a large folder.

hey guys, this problem is back. nearly 4 weeks after i formated, ive tried the suggestions and the problem stays, i have even disabled disk indexing in the admin tools under services.

i did have 2 dodgy programs (probably viruses) that were trying to connect to the interweb but i think/thought i got rid of them as they are not in the task manager no more and my apps can find them (AVG, SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware)

i have turned off most of the unwanted apps in task manager and turned off random apps loading at startup but nothing makes a difference.

i only noticed that the temps were higher than normal after i installed my new card reader which made me look at the task manager/performance and core 1 was under 50-100% load. the issue was alternating between the 2 cores (handing the load back and forward)

any ideas or does it look like a format is order again. id rather not as i have got my system running the way want it and all my programs are installed etc
