Please advise on a tablet up to £200. Will be used to watch movies, browse internet. Stream to a tv occasionally. Needs to be android. Will be taken travelling frequently.

The following seem to be widely recommended.

Nexus 7 2013 (£100) [good enough? Is the model age an issue for what I want to use it for?]
Nvidia Shield K1 (£150) [Strong for gaming, but I don't need gaming. the controller would be wasted on me.]
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (£200) [relatively short battery life being reported, excellent screen]

Can anyone offer a recommendation? Needs to be android.

You don't need to spend that much cash for a great android tablet. You could get a Lenovo A7 quad core tablet recently for.. £40, I have the exact one and paid £100 about 6 months ago. It will do everything you want at great quality. The screen is pretty great as well.

Toss up between the Samsung and the Nvidia Shield imo. The Samsung does have a large battery however as OP has stated the run time does seem short? For me the Nvidia Shield looks promising as even if you are not a gamer the strong performance in such a small form factor will enable it to last before having to replace.

The quality of the screen of the Samsung keeps drawing me back. Otherwise the nexus 7 seems to offer the better performance of a cheaper tablet like the Lenovo. Or is that not right?

Is the Samsung's battery really only good for 4 hours of movie watching?

Why does it need to be Android? The Linx 7 (Windows 8.1) can do all what you say, plus it has full windows 32bit, micro usb, micro hdmi.

It can stream full HD movies from my desktop to flatscreen, browse the net, play games and the battery is pretty good actually. The bonus is that with Windows you can install anything you like and usb ports you can connect anything you want.
