Dont mind spending more than the £100 if it gives performance a boost as to what £100 would buy me if that makes sense.

Would second hand/Members market be worth a look?

Am currently borrowing a 4850 512MB from a friend after I sold all my old rig to fund a new one.

Card will be used for Gaming, HD playback as well as general use.

I play a mixture of games, anything from Monkey Island to ARMA II to DCS Black Shark (Soon) and Empire: Total War and NBA 2K9.

I game at 1680x1050.

Prefer games to be 60fps+ if possible. I know the human eye shouldnt be able to detect anything above 30fps or whatever but I can - ROFL

Current System spec:

AMD Phenom II 720BE Tri Core at stock 2.8Ghz
4GB DDR3 RAM

Thanks.

what do you have now and how do you intend to use the new card ? for gaming ? what games ? for browsing ? for HD playback ?

also the rest of your system specs would be good so we can match the card to your current specs :)

Added. Sorry, should have included it with the original post.

This is the best card for around that budget.
A look on the members market for a 4890 or a GTX 275 would also be worthwhile.

Also, for the 4870/4890 I suggest looking at a getting this cooler. Makes the whole thing much cooler and quieter.

I agree with cmndr_andion on all counts there, BUT ! im running a 4850 too but i wont be upgrading to any of those cards as i feel the performance gain isnt that great to justify buying a whole new card at 100+ quid , im waiting for the new ATI 5XXX range, that will be a better upgrade imo :)

That's fair enuf- the performance increase will certainly not be that big to justify ditching the 4850 for a 4870. However, I think the OP is just borrowing the current 4850, so I would guess he can't keep it forever. In this case a 4870 or second-hand 4890 would be a good choice to round out his new rig and give a nice performance boost over his friend's 4850.

But as yo say, CSA - if the OP can wait out until later this year with the current 4850 then he will be able to get his hands on much faster cards for his £100 when the DX11 cards get released in the autumn.

My friend wants his 4850 back which is fair enough, ive had it for a while so not sure if I can wait much longer.

In that case then with a bugdet of 100 quid i go for a 4870 (1gb if possible) , that will tide you over nicely till you upgrade again :)

Ok, thanks for the help.

The 4890 for £127 are not in stock.

So, it is either the HSI 4870 at £104 or the ASUS 4870 at £109.

Is the ASUS worth the extra fiver? Is the fan better?

I'd recommend asking in the MM if anybody is selling a 4890 or and GTX275 first. Second hand will probably be just over £100 and be noticably better in most games than the 4870

Any ideas as to the performance difference between a 4870 and the new 5xxx cards?
I would imagine, as is usually the case, that the new high-end (ie 5870) card will have roughly the performance as the twin-gpu high-end of the current generation (ie 4870x2). There're a few speculation threads around, take a looksie. :)

However, the 5870 will not be £100 at launch. The 4870 was around £200. I can't remember what the 4850 was.

Wow some of the prices on B-Grade never cease to amaze.

Can't work out if they are just waiting for someone really gullible or they just NEVER bother to readjust proces in there.
