First of all, I plan on building an entire new machine, but I'll use my existing 7870XT graphics card. It's not exactly a bottle neck :)

Goal:-
1) I want the machine to be fairly cool and quiet. Hence even getting the PMW version of the cooler!
2) I'd plan on overclocking the i7 to 4.4->4.5. I know an i5 is cheaper, but I figure maybe the i7 might get better used in games in years to come.
3) Aiming fairly hi-spec like I did with my Q6600 which has lasted me for 6yrs. If this can last nearly that long (with a GFX card update), perfect!

Questions would be:-
1) I've gone with 16GB of 1600mhz CL9 memory. From what I understand the memory speed plays no part in overclocking the CPU? So 2400mhz memory and CL11 is not really an advantage? And you certainly wouldn't notice it in real life usage?
2) Gone for a Noctua DH14. It's unfortunately fairly ugly, but I want quiet usage and guarantee a bit of clearance for the RAM etc. I think I'd want to keep away from liquid cooling to keep things simply and reliable.

Any advice/suggestions welcome :)

EDIT: Don't think that version of the Noctua DH14 will fit an 1150 socket :( I'd have to get a regular DH14 without PMW fans!

^^ Why the small(er) CPU cooler? Why not just get a DH14 or Raijintek Tisis?

And again, I'm no expert, but I'll swear people generally say CL9 1600mhz memory is just as good as CL11 2400mhz?

Need to make sure you clear the tall ram, it will if you use slots 2+4.

If you use a huge (wider cooler) then it may hit them.

Edit,

I've actually been a bit forgetful and forgot about this,

1 x silverstone heligon sst-he01 cpu cooler £44.99
total : £53.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).

its reduced in price, its a top cooler and has different fan modes (quiet or loud for performance) it also clears all ram in the slots.

Understood, but why the eagerness to get 2400mhz memory, when the 1600mhz CL9 memory I listed is standard size so would allow the DH14 or Raijintek Tisis?

Faster= better, Haswell (and DC, same thing) like fast RAM.

Besides,

I have given you an option of a cooler that is huge, reduced in price by £15, quiet or loud (you decide) and fits all RAM in the slots.

Or,

A bundle that is red, low-profile RAM, freebies and a good PSU.

OK... I wasn't sure about the CL9 1600mhz vs CL11 2400mhz memory speeds, but this is interesting - http://wccftech.com/haswell-works-high-speed-ram-benchmarks-show-ddr31600-mhz/

So, if I got the HyperX it would definately fit with the DH14 - http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=compatibility_ram_gen&products_id=34&lng=en :)

I dont know about the NH-D14, it looks big, the Silverstone I can guarantee does 100% fit as one of the heatsink stacks is thinner than the other (have this side facing the RAM).

Actually just looked at that Noctua link and it has a fat red X next to the HyperX Beast.

The DH14 is generally consider one of the best air coolers around I believe, from both a temp and noise point of view.

As for ram fitting with it...

And once again, thanks for the advice re getting 2400mhz over 1600mhz - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/2011/12/kingston-hyperx-genesis-quad-channel-2400mhz-ddr3-review/5/

That RAM fits for sure.

Alpenfohn K2, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Noctua NH-D14, Silverstone HE01, Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3.

All top coolers and quiet etc.

You cant go wrong with any of them:)

OK, so looks like the shopping list is:-

+ A Noctua NM-i115x kit to allow the D14 SE2011 to fit onto the 1150 socket! (So £5 expense to get the D14 with upgraded Noctua PMW fans :))

I far prefer the look of the Phanteks as obviously the D14 is somewhat pig ugly and I could get the Phanteks to colour match my case. eg: white & red... But the D14 generally gets the better reviews as regarding fitting it and noise levels, plus has more ram clearance, so D14 it is I guess.
