Ok, I've tried to get up to speed, kids (damn them pesky types!) have stopped my enjoyment of the clocking fun..
With that in mind, I want to game at 1080, 25 to 27 monitor, I'm thinking ryzen 1600 can you guys spec me 16g ram, I want an amd graphics card and a 144hz monitor for freesync. I need a ssd and also at least a 1tb drive. I have a ridiculous enermax gold power supply, likely for a server!

I need suggestions on a good cooler that can take me with the ram to 4gig at about 60C. Currently have a lian li case from 12 years ago, maybe newer stuff is better..

I know it's a lot to ask, but if you can't do the monitor, prob my folks can sort the 300 odd it'll cost at xmas.. (I have a 22 already 1080)..

Cheers in advance for your suggestions

Thanks for the replies, certainly has given me food for thought. I neglected to mention I need a dvd rewriter, as I have a back catalogue of 20 years or so of games! Maybe this can also be a blu ray drive too? I'm not crazy keen on having an external drive, (more cables and mess to lose!). I'm thinking I'll have to stall on the monitor til xmas, get the missus and the folks to buy for me :)
I'm liking the gpu, as you say it's on preorder, any ideas what sort of time frame this is likely to be? I'm also leaning towards the 1600 as I do enjoy rts games and these usually seem to enjoy the extra cores.. On the subject of overclocking, I thought the 1600 was fairly easy to get to 3.9/4.0, especially since the bios updates?

Do I really need 16gig of ram? Will 8 be sufficient? I'm not a huge worker on my pc, but I do like to encode films, also I make occasional dvds of my kids birthdays/family events etc for my wife's family as they live near 6000 miles away.

So in short, ideally I'd like the 1600 cpu minimum, 8 gig ram, (can be expensive to get my overclock!) A decent aftermarket cpu cooler, full atx mboard (microatx too fiddly for me!) the 580 has me sold on that price, but I can't be waiting like months for it! I'm hoping dropping down to 8 gig ram and removing monitor, will give you guys some room to change up what I can buy. I've been doing lots of reading the last few days, but you know how it is, it starts to jumble up! Sometimes it's nice for other peoples ideas that can spark more questions and hopefully answers, til I can make a clear choice on exactly what I want to order.

I want to just double check that the zen revision next year will defo drop into an AM4 board yeah? Aside from that, thanks for your input so far, I look forward to further suggestions from you.

Coffee i5 spanks Ryzen @ 1080p. Not only that but OP wishes a 144Hz monitor, which means a lot of frames. There are benchmarks showing up to 50 fps difference in some games at 1080p. Which upcoming game are you thinking of that an i5-8600K won't handle?
Thanks for your input, however intel is too damn expensive for me unless you can come up with a system I can afford? I'm no fan boy, but I just assumed the cpu and motherboard alone on the coffee basically would buy 3/4 of a 1600 system..

Well you mentioned two budgets, one £1000 the other £1300. Won't fit the first that's for sure.

I'm trying to fit everything in for around the 1k mark. However, I can remove the monitor and perhaps drop from 16 to 8 gig system ram. So maybe give an extra £350 in that 1k for components ?

lol @ 'triggered', found it funny myself :)
Just wondering if it's worth spending more on a mboard to get a better oc on the 1600? (sorry intel peeps, just I see that there's no way I'm getting a K chip, not for an age anyways, and then prob cost too much cash.) If I can get 3.9/4ghz on a 1600 it'll be on a par with most benchmarks for the non-k i5 or even beat it. Does anyone know if the coffee mboards are likely to be around for 2/3 years?

As I said earlier, I can remove the monitor from the price, so that should give 2-300 extra to play with. Looking at the ram side of things.. it's about £200 for 3200 which should clock the ryzen 1600 nicely up to 3.9/4.0 which is what I'm looking for. I've seen a aio cooler that can fit the kolink case the frostflow 240? seems to have reasonable reviews and at 50 quid, can expect better cooling than the stock job!

Thanks for all your input, it is most welcome.. like I said, different views trigger more research for me, hopefully then I can crystallize which components I need.

Edit: @Lee, just saw what you said about the monitor, I saw it a bit earlier, however I'm not sure whether curved might 'freak me out'! Friend of mine has a curved tv, takes a bit of getting used to when walking in the room. Maybe it's just me, but they look 'awkward'?????

B350 and X370 clock the same

you'll find we'll all pretty much quote the Strix & Gaming 3 on the B350 chipset for budget and to squeeze the best possible cpu or gpu out of the £100+ saving or if the OP has got the cash and wants the best , ASrock Taichi and ROG Hero- this is were you chase the .25/.5/.75 hz cpu overclock and 3200+ ram hz with tight timings- but you'll also need a strong Core- non X your rolling the luck of the Die

I've had a scout about and it seems 1600 aren't hugely different from 1600x, not bin wise anyways.. like I said, I'm not after a ridiculous oc, 3.9/4 will do fine.. I'm looking to surpass i5 coffee performance for less money ideally :)

yes, why we all quote it. also get a RGB cooler! board like the gaming and strix had a header for it too :)

few rate the cooler well- much better then intels as least !

save a bit of cash to and clocks to 3.7Ghz with it on

you'll surpass its life more likely due to double the threads, or if you move to 1440p gaming or streaming!
intel at the time being have the strongest IPC, IMC - think AMD will catch this with Zen 2- i expect zen+ or fresh to hammer out the speed to bring intel to a sweat again and force them to lower pricing

you are speaking to an amd 64 phase change fan :) I do fondly reminisce about my vapochill LS and my 3700 with gskill ram and the dfi lanparty board.. the dielectric grease is still present!!! With A64, intel were producing the egg frier!!! my mate had one.. I've always liked AMD mainly from a pricing point.. but also from an oc point.. I still fondly remember the lead pencil mod, the golden fingers mod, even the 2500xp mobile processor which was mad for o/c lol.. Intel got wise and started to unlock, but they charge such a premium.. imagine if AMD didn't exist, intel would still be shuffling out processors in 100mhz increments..

fun thing is Mr 8 pack actually updated my LS with a chilly head, golden froster board and a danfoss 1/2hp compressor.. When I started on this forum, you needed 250 posts to get members market, then it went to 500, now it's a 1000 !!! I have loads of really nice retro kit, gskill etc fx 51 / 53/ 55/ 57 can't sell it though lol.. even though I've been here for near 13 years !

ok finalising my build.. here goes:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,032.43
(includes shipping: £11.70)

I bought a few sundries like the paste and removal stuff.. I usually take g card coolers straight off and give them a decent contact with quality stuff. About ssd's, m2 the better solution? or does it just depend on what you want aesthetically/ case constraints? As I said earlier, likely get the monitor as a xmas present, well it certainly beats socks! Thanks for your input, will be pulling the trigger this afternoon.

Some M.2's are faster. That one's regular speed, and about the same price as a normal SATA SSD so up to you and what you want aesthetically/case constraints wise.

You could always get the 5.5g of Kryonaut paste and swap the Crucial for the slightly better Samsung 850 EVO (regular SSD). Has a bit more warranty (5 years) too.

Just a reminder about the PSU depth, that case takes up to 155mm depth only.

240mm liquid isn't needed to cool a 1600 even with overclocking if you want to save £15-20 there.

Liking warranty :p 240 isn't needed, but maybe handy if I drop something else in.. aside from the samsung, I'm happy my shopping list makes the grade! Changing the ssd now :

better? :)

Dump the after market cooler until you find out what your CPU is able to do, on what voltage, best advice I can give. If you get a stinker you'll have wasted £60+ for nothing. ;)

EDIT: How much on thermal paste? Complete waste of money.

I'm an optimist.. the after-market cooler will continue to give my cpu much cooler temps, however, it might well help a good deal on temps for oc's.. thermal paste? lmao..

trigger was pulled last night lol.. i've got a confirmation email, however santander on the phone this morning at 8.30!!! asking if I'd ordered lol.. Not expecting the 480 til 28th was what overclockers said, but I have a 650ti to install etc.. I'm thinking about win 10 now, I'm assuming I need the pro version.. better to buy full copy of 7 and upgrade? Or better to download 10 pro and buy an oem key? Ideally I'd like a physical installation disk/ zip drive, does windows key off the rj45 addy? Just want to know as if you clock, everything else changes.. Thanks for all your help and ideas.. like I said been out the loop a good while, but glad I've come up with a fairly decent system. You read and read, it ends up a bit frantic, nice for some sense from some clear minds :)

Now, once it's arrived and built, expect more posts regarding clocking/temps etc :)

you can just get normal windows 10 to be honest- I have Pro CD and buy keys - have confirmed that they were genuine Retail keys with MS over the phone when someone did the same thing- buying a cheap CD key haha

I believe if you know someone with windows 10 the can create a media creation - boot tool on a USB or DVD if you'd like to go about it that way - or just fork down the hard cash for straight up

Just as well I rang overclockers, just a note to everyone else who orders a build that has something on pre-order, by default they don't ship til they have the full order, so in my case the 580 is expected for around the 28th! Build should arrive tomorrow, i've got a 650ti to get everything installed, then when the g card turns up, should be laughing! Family are on alert for my xmas present already, a nice freesync monitor, it's gotta beat the gillette gift box no?

Pcs pics pics
I shall try my best.. please do understand I've never owned an ssd pc.. next, please understand I've never had something that's going to cain 1080.. I've been buying games.. my steam account has rise of the tomb raider, doom, rise of mordor, (I've not even installed these yet!) like seriously, I've told the kids, daddies gone for 6 months :)

I will try and show with pics, what can be achieved, with a little bit of thought, a whole load of asking (from here!) and a bit of willingness to learn..

Ok the main build turned up on the 17th, can't fault OCers, an email and text to tell me what time the delivery would arrive, freeing up my morning for shopping etc.. Then the great news, text on the Friday to say by Monday 23rd, I'd have the 580 turning up!! Was funny, I was in a CEX looking at a RX480 8 gig for £280 second hand, when my text explaining delivery for the brand new rx580 arrived! (Sorry for third party chat, but in this case it does demonstrate they aren't even competitors!) Yep £30 cheaper, 15% roughly faster, and a 3 year warranty.. competitor? I think not!!!
To couple the enjoyment, I got dragged into a charity shop by my better half, I found a brand new Razer Taipan, in the box for £10. The gods must be smiling on me!!! Guy behind the counter said a shop had gone bust and the owner donated some old stock.. few other razer stuff but none like the taipan..
I've been super busy last week or so, haven't started the build, now it's kids half term so pressed for time. I'll try my best to take some build photos and then some stock speed benchies.. Then we can have some fun doing some clocking over the next few weeks. The radiator on the cooler is major heavy.. The case is flimsy as you like.. I'm used of aluminium cases that are nicely built.. but I shall persevere, and we shall see how the chips fall. This is essentially a new build that you guys helped to quote on, I have a monitor currently that can do 1080, so should be able to do some nice benchmarks and let people know what it's like.

Thanks again for all your help, made a big difference, the kids were amazed with the packs of haribo in the boxes, (they thought I was kidding!) now wish me luck to get up and running.. :)
