I'd like over a terabyte of storage, quad core, and if possibly I'd like to keep the whole thing as quiet as possible, I was also thinking about a 22" or even a 24" monitor to replace my 19" widescreen. I could even go along the route of dual screens, which I think I'd really like.
I can overclock but I'm not that good at extreme stuff

I currently have:

X2 6000+ @ 3.4ghz
2GB Corsair PC6400
Asus SLI-MN32 Deluxe Wi-Fi edition
600W Tagan PSU
Antec Lanboy
512MB 1900XT Silent Edition
Audigy 2 7.1

Is it even worth upgrading now? My system doesn't feel especially slow but I feel as though I have money to burn. There's always the option of buying the things that won't technologically devalue now, such as hard drives and screens, then upgrade in a few months

Is it worth upgrading now with the current technology or waiting for the next big thing?

How are the new AMD chips looking?

Are they ridiculously fast?

Laptop Option

I have always considered a laptop, it would be a great help for my work, if possible I'd look to spent about the same, and I'd want it portable, but powerful enough to do all of the above, that way I could keep my desktop. What are the current options at the moment?

The AMDs look to be pretty OK. They're nothing to get in a huff about. Frankly I don't think it's worth upgrading as that's still a pretty fast rig. However, if you can't control the urge the following would be a pretty good choice:

I'm in the mind of buying myself a new rig because of the awesome new line of games. I have one or two things on mind how my rig would be but looking at your spec its half decent. Have you considered selling any components and thinking how much you might get for them.

Also if your considering getting a 24" and running games at higher resolution then a 8800GTS is definately worth considering. As for the laptop, unless you know you can get one for cheap and not thinking of shelling out £800-£1200 on a laptop then i wouldn't consider it due to its lack of upgradabilty and resell value.
